it says that HQ-16 completed flight testing over land in 2005. They also started development of the land based version HQ-16A, which started testing in Oct 2006. HQ-16A successfully hit 28 out of 29 targets in testing.
There is also a HQ-16B and HQ-16 improved version in development. Talks about developing active/semi active combined guidance and "Vane ablation"??. It will be interesting to see where this two new version of HQ-16 fits into 054 program and other programs in the future.

That depends on how much the newer missile is compatible, in terms of physical hardware and software control interface, with current HQ-16 system already in service, though it should be modular enough to mate with new upgrades.

^ I think it was more directed towards future iterations of 054 and/or future destroyer, VLS and general SAM projects/modularity and not whether a future missile can fit into current ships.

I'm more interested in how extensive new variants of HQ-16 will be, whether they will upgrade it like the USN standard missile to replace HQ-9 altogether, or continue its work as a medium range missile.

Vane ablation suggests vanes in the exhaust of the rocket engine. This gas is hot enough to burn away the vanes, but that burning away can be slow enough for the vanes to survive until burn out of the engine.
