By tonnage 054 class already borderline destroyer class, but double hanger for Z-15 (IIRC that is bigger than Z-9)? That'd need a wider hull, may just as well be a new class then.

the laser cannon in the 2nd pic clearly place it in the fan boy art business. though, I think it's time the fan boys to get into the gaming industry. pretty awesome 3D skills.

Some studios in China take in post-processing jobs from outside, and even anime production work from Japan, and given tools for the trade is getting standard, if you have the tools all you need is skill and time.

If the PLAN were to build this frigate, it would be a very nice and very powerful FFG with a good sized main gun, 48 VLS cells, spaces for two helos, strong close in anti-air, I am assuming torpedoes too, and good eight missile anti-surface.

It would probably displace in excess of 6,000 tons and be closer to a destroyer in terms of its armament.

I think though, that they are clearly happy with their Type 054A and they seem to continue to build them in serial production.

A vessel such as this, if built, is probably still a number of years out. Is there any "official" PLAN documentation on this? Or is this something a private individual has devised? ie. Is there even a Chinese shipbuilding company proposing this design?

I don't think they will build it any time soon, the 14 Type 054A shows that it has been designated as a mass building ship.

Such a ship like in the fanboy drawing are redundant of some PLAN destroyers.

Agreed...and the laser CIWS and the huge leap forward in propulsion and engines for electrical generation it would necessitate is just not ready yet.

The 16 Type 054A will be finished in a couple of years. Of course there will be a post-2015 frigate with improved capabilities - and ASW is one area where PLAN ought to make some progress.

Doubtful if the 022 have the juice to power it, not to mention it'd be pretty big for such a small boat.

That makes no sense because a smaller platform won't have the necessary power for such a weapon. the PLAN have dedicated test ships for new weapons anyway.

But I would expect to see a ship similar to this once 054A production ends, which should be soon. It will be very interesting to see what the new surface combatants of PLAN post 2015 will look like, in both size and configuration.

it seems like the 5th 054A left HD shipyard late November to start sea trials. I totally missed that part. Going back to look at my pictures, the last one I had of it was mid November. If compare the 6th HD 054A to the 7th from HP, looks like it's at least beat it this time around. Although now that the 056 production is getting started, it will be interesting to see how that affects the rate of production for 054A.

I guess everybody is surprised at what is going at Hudong.

Since they have apparently begun building 056 at Hudong, there appears to be an off-chance that the last 054A's will all be built by Huangpu.
