Look closely at that model. There are only 32 VLS cells. That's, as Blitzo says, a model of the existing 054A.Possible model of the Type 054B, with 48 HHQ-16 missiles (VLS).

It's just a 054A model, the only difference from the real deal is that the model carries not a Z-9 helicopter.
You really need to get a pair prescription glasses, or serious mental treatment...

How could you ever forget this model photo? When it was posted by tphuang in the old 054 thread - http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/navy/ffg-054-054a-thread-15-1438.html (# 212) - it was provided with Chinese captions indicating that it had 8 ASW missile launchers amidships. Whatever one might think of that, at least it indicates a recognition of the need to improve the ASW capabilities of 054A (while looking up this photo, I came across the assessment that bd popeye had sought from his son, a sonar specialist in the USN, his assessment being that the sonar dome of 054A looked like a toy...).

believe or not to believe. time will tell.
The current radar and air-defense sets is a "good enough" solution. but not ideal.
they want something they can export to smaller navies as the backbone airdefence frigate. (think all the pakistans and thailands)
they also realized that they also have to have good enough all around capability including AD, as those ships would operate in pairs or small squadrons for extended periods out in Indian Ocean, with out extensive support. but also cheap enough to build en-mass.
the good folks over there in CSIS 701 institue are salivating over the FREMMs as we speak.
think of it as a much cheaper version of AB.

Any idea when we might start seeing this FREMM like frigate?
The current 054A is quite capable at present but it is below the new european frigates, which could be called light destroyers in themselves. It makes sense for the PLAN to acquire larger frigates like FREMM... but I think they would require a common VLS to make full use of multirole potential.
Maybe they could share systems with the 052C's follow on.
A force of 10k ton destroyer/crusiers and 6k ton frigates I think would be optimal for the PLAN's future missions, along with carrier escort.
