An update on the new batch being built in Dalian. The superstructure is taking shape, and indeed it looks different from previous 052Ds. Is that a different radar atop the main mast?
I suspect it's a new radar to the ship, but not a new radar overall. We have already seen this radar somewhere.
It's might be and likely to be, the double sided AESA we have seen on the Type 075. This radar is meant to replace the Type 364 radar that sits on top of the 052D mast and is also seen on many ships. As I said before, the Type 364 radar is a surface search radar intended to be a sea skimmer antiship missile spotter. It is optimized to detect objects flying low over the water. This radar is used as an adjunct or secondary to the main radar. It is however old, having first appeared on the Type 052B, and uses a mechanical array. It is long overdue for a replacement which is what I expect this new AESA to be. For now I refer to this new radar as the Type 368.
It's far too early to fit real radars so you might expect dummies to take the place. For me it does not appear there are much changes to the superstructure if at all. Installation of the Type 368 would not require superstructure changes, unlike the installation of the four fixed X band AESA on the 055. But it's much cheaper and requires the least change. The new radar may also be heading to new Type 054A.
The appearance of the traditional mast arms used to hold the ESMs do not point to an integrated mast like on the 055. However we need to confirm what really are the superstructures seen on Jiangnan.
