When would you load a round like this ?
Is this done only in case the normal feed mechanism fails somehow or is this the way to feed rounds into the magazine ?
I would assume there is an easier way to access the magazine.

Don’t think this is the normal way to feed ammunition into the magazine. I would think the magazine would be below deck in a carousel, this looks dangerous even along side let alone having to reload at sea. The turret for sure is unable to hold a large number of shells and would need reloading if the magazine in it.

I find this deployment to be very interesting. Do you know where Midway Island is? That is very far. One has to consider that this formation has its home base in the Zhanjiang naval base in Guangdong province. Destroyer 161 Hohhot should be the 2nd Destroyer flotilla, which includes the 167 Shenzhen, 168 Guangzhou and 169 Wuhan. 161 Hohhot is accompanied by one of the Type 901, I think 967, and other vessels can be accompanying her. 161 is currently the newest and most advanced destroyer in the SCS fleet, but is the only advanced destroyer in the 2nd, which is in need of more 052Ds.

The Chinese Navy's long-sea joint training formation crossed the international date change line yesterday and is continuing to sail north of Midway Island in the North Pacific.
