what I'm curious about: what flows out of a destroyer from like holes above the waterline, and why, thanks

Just holes for ballast tank pumps.

They are useful as a stand alone array for anti stealth, but I'm not sure if it serves a major purpose. Personally I wonder if the ship can still perform 99% of its functions even without the Yagi antenna.

ohh well, sometimes that 1% could mean the survival of the ship itself

Another good thing about VHF array is that a lot less sensors (planes) can detect it. To detect their emissions, one also needs correspondigly sized array. Such equipment is not standard on many combat planes as rwr systems today usually detect emissions in the 0.5 to 18 ghz range. UHF band is therefore borderline and probably detectable with modern rwr but VHF is with its 0.03 to 0.3 ghz below the usual rwr range. specialized elint/esm aircraft are another story, of course.

I read that the yagi is used for volume search on occasions when they don't need the PAR powered on and/or in addition to it. Also read that the PAR is not kept on all the time but not sure how valid these points are.

There is no need to turn the new APARS on all the time. The old yagi radar is more than capable for searching vast areas. The yagi radar is quite old and adversary navies probably already have and emitter signature of this radar, but not the APAR. the trick is to keep emission of the new APAR to the minimum and preferably with peace-time modes.

Amazing. The following photo is the type of thing that RIMPAC makes possible...courtesy of the US Navy. (Thanks Asif, for finding it.)

That's the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF), JS Ise, DDH-182, helicopter carrier, docked across from the Chinese Navy (PLAN), Haikou, DDG-171, destroyer, at Pearl Harbor. Both are attending RIMPAC 2014.

Normally, those two vessels would not be wuithin many, many miles of each other.

But, they are both flying the American flag while there in port, and they can come together under common interests and goals with such exercises.

An amazing photo.

Breaking news, the captains of JMSDF DDH-182 and PLAN DDG-171 just lodged formal complaints against the other side that
their helicopters violeted their newest Air Defense Identification Zone over Pearl Harbor. And the U.S flown 10 B-52 over both
ships to show them Freedom of Navigation shall be respected. :p

Like Winston Churchill said, jaw-jaw is better than war-war. Amazing photo to be sure.

Also to add, VHF are much more effective against stealth; probably help against stealth ships and aircraft.
