The 052D Destroyer 173 Changsha, which had "disappeared" last year in the Indian Ocean, is currently located in the same place, i.e. east of the Indian Ocean. Some talk about an operation to deter any Indian invasion attempt on the Maldives...

I've heard rumors of this news, actually came here to check if it were true.

Is this this first instance of the type 52D being deployed (not including military exercises) outside the SCS and ECS? I've always been under the impression that that China generally sent the type 054 frigates abroad, for anti - piracy patrols and visiting foreign ports.

DDG 174 was deployed to conduct exercises with the Russian Baltic Fleet and then joined the naval parade at St Petersburg. Originally, DDG 173 was sent to participate but a fault with her gas turbine meant she had to return for repairs while DDG 174 took her place.

That's where her rumored "disappearance" began. But obviously it seems DDG 173 is okay now. The other story rumored to be heard was that her captain was "purged" or caught in the web of anti corruption.

All the other ships have been around too. The nature of the escort fleet tends to be either 1 destroyer and 1 frigate plus supply ship, or 2 frigates plus supply ship. The destroyer have been Type 052C or 052D, but older destroyers like 051B, 052 and 052B have been used too. Type 053H3 frigates have been used in these missions too. I am not so sure about Type 051C and Sovremenny class destroyers though used in the escort missions, and these destroyers tend to exercise with the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet.

If one interprets a video broadcast by the Chinese army, in which a oow of the destroyer 173 Changsha was interviewed, the "disappearance" of last year's building in the Indian Ocean would have been caused by a failure of a "underwater equipment".
