Displacement might be about the same to slightly higher. VLS cels about the same. As much of the 052D design retained to lower costs, with the emphasis on the new going to be the new radars and IEP.

I think PLAN procurement maybe hitting crossroads. Drop the 052E, just go all 055. Make a mix of 052E and 055, you have a higher total number of ships but you won't get as many 055 as you can. The attraction of doing another 052 type is because you already have the experience and the infrastructure to manufacture it and every new ship you make the average cost of the ship costs down. However, this may take resources away from the 055. If they are going to make a decision they need to make it soon. Would be interesting to know what the "leaks" would have to say in the next few months.

You assume that money would have to be "taken" away from the 055 to fund the 052E in the first place. This should not be any kind of default assumption, as if the PLAN somehow has your preferences and also desires a two-class blue water navy instead of three, but somehow just can't bring itself to do so. Rather, if we see the 052E the PLAN is certainly indicating that they want a three-class navy and will devote the necessary resources to the class, and not at the expense of some other class like the 055. That would be like saying the PLAN is somehow "diverting" resources from the YJ-18 to fund the YJ-12, or the J-15 to fund the J-15S, as if one is somehow inherently less worthy than the other to exist.

IMO a 052E would be around 8,000t max and keep the same number of cells at 64. The 052D seems overstuffed and could use a little more breathing room, especially for more power and more space for future expansion with newer systems/weapons.
