usually Hull and Propulsion Machinary are coupled. but not always.

Soviet Projet 1134B Berkut B Cruisers had 1134A Berkut A Cruisers hulls but Gas turbine instead of Oil fired steam turbines as propulsion units.
Kashin vs Kanin (61 vs 57A Destroyers also had the suimilar treatment , although the hull was a bigger enlargement.

I hope Dalian Get their act together and start to build 052 series. 051C is really a welfare project. There is no absolutely no rational reason other than local interest infighting to produce 2 mature hull types fullfilling very similar requirement.

Which raises an interesting point, since the pair of 051C boats Dalian's sole naval project seems to have been Varyag, now whilst that it a major programme it does not have to prevent Dalian from building other vessels. Indeed given the growth of the shipyard it is surprising that it has not turned out anymore DDG's/FFG's. Especially whenother yards have been out of action through relocation.

or CSIC should just get out the business of building FFGs and DDGs altogether and concentrate on nuclear subs and container ships.
near all the new major combatants that has been build /building in strength (including all the new LPDs and Replenishers) has came from CSSC.

My "pet wish" is to convert the pair of 051C by ripping out of Rif-Ms and make them back to the double hangars along same line as the original 051B. DDG 167. make them into large ASW destroyers.
Rif-M is being outclassed by the newest incarnation of HHQ-9. and PLAN's ASW needs an upgrade.

Any latest update on 052 (Luhu class), read on the same forum somewhere that they presently receiving extensive retrofitting & upgrades. Any pics...

These ships would probably be collecting dust since the new ships are pumped out at a rapid rate. These would probably be assigned to second tier fleets, serving as training and patrol vessels (still naval, but just more relaxed).

Ship hulls are not that expensive. It's better to build a new hull with new systems than to use old hulls for new systems. If a hull is too old, it would not worth the effort.

well buddy both ship entered service in 1994 & 96 respectively:

052 class are still very important in the NSF, which does not have many new warships. 112 looks like it's undergoing some serious refitting. I don't think it's too high on the priority given the long time that it has spent at HD shipyard, but it should still be the main ASW ship of NSF once it finishes refitting. Remember, PLAN is very frugal and tries to make use of any remaining ship regardless of how old they may be.

if 051C gets converted into ASW destroyers than NSF will be completely devoid of any ships with air defense capabilities. After all, these ships are suppose to extend out the defense of Beijing with their long range SAMs.

and in escort missions with the carrier - the 051 C don't need those helicopter hangar
