Re: DDG 052C Thread

The 054a have the same bow dome. Nothing too unusual about the destroyers having them. I will eventually go home and actually gave these photos uploaded on this board. Aman, is it really that hard for you to upload photo on image shack when you see them?

Or, to put it another way: A modern destroyer/frigate that did not have a large bow-mounted sonar would be fit for the scrapyard.

To apologise for our Russian friends: The SOVREMENNYY was never conceived as an ASW vessel, but exclusively an anti-surface one

I don't believe 051C has the bow-mounted sonar either (or at least I have not seen photo of that). All things considered, the Sovs in service with PLAN actually have decent ASW capability. They did get the latest export versions of sonars that Russians had at that time.

Just posted the pictures. At least looking from these early photos, the new DDGs have not changed that much from 052C. You can pretty much see the flat rectangular space they have set up for one of the MFR panels. You can also see that little platform in front of the bridge. Looks like we will have Type 730 on that little platform again. Just continuing to wait for pictures when this gets more developed.

It might turns out that we've all been hoping a bit too much and the appearance probably won't change much aside from increase number of missiles and inside upgrades.

Re: DDG 052C Thread

So the question is why are they sticking with the same, relatively small hull for a large destroyer? Burke had a beam of almost 20 meters 20 years ago. Pretty much all new european destroyers (horizon, type 45) and large frigates have a beam of 20 or even 21 meters. Even smaller ships like FREMM have a wider beam than this, even though they displace maybe 60% of what 052c displaces.

A wild, wild guess would be that they dont envision having powerful enough engines for the forseable future - so a narrow hull is the only way to achieve decent speeds. Any other guesses?

Yes they are, they help with hydrodynamic performance and thus reduce fuel consumption. The colour difference would not be at all surprising, vessels often have one colour above the waterline and one below. Furthermore it could simply be the colour the manufacturer painted it- bulbous bows usually being made in seperate machine shops.

That is not to say that it is not a sonar dome, it most probably is if we follow the logic that this ship is a destroyer, but the presence of a bulbous bow does not immediately mean sonar.

My feeble attempt at irony seems to have fallen rather flat. As far as I know, the first ships with a bulbous bow were YAMATO and MUSASHI, laid down in 1937, but some of the contemporary transatlantic liners may also have had it.

You may note in the Future PLAN Warships thread that our ex-USN friend bd popeye is quite happy with the bow sonar dome, both the term and its presence on the Jiangnan newbuilding.

Re: DDG 052C Thread

according to the guy posting these photos (who has been very accurate with everything), these are photos of the 2nd new DDG under construction in JN shipyard. btw, they have prediction for more DDGs coming out of JN shipyard. As usual, I'm playing the wait and see approach.
