I think this is an odd pic too because if it is a section with potentially the VLS structure, it's running the length of the ship like the VLS in front of the bridge. But it doesn't taper like the front of the bridge and the open spot in the middle on top is more like the hangar.
I agree.

If it is VLS, then it is not the Type 052D. If it is the hanger section, then it is the 5th Type 052D.

I just felt that section there in the middle, if it is not scaffolding, looked similar to a VLS supporting structure.

Time will tell.

A closer look at that module suggest if it belongs to a type 052D under construction, this particular 052D would not be exactly identical to the ones we've seen fitting out before. The arrangement of the door and window on either side of the gap representing hanger door look to be somewhat different. Instead of 2 doors to the starboard side of the hanger, there is now just one and a window.

It could be just a very minor rearrangement.

I'm going to guess an incomplete aft helo pad section with the hangar far from done for D4.
Well, I spent some time, got the two photos, scaled them to match...and to me now, it is probably 99% sure that it is in fact the aft section of the 4th Type 052D showing the lower portion of the hanger along with what will be the helo deck and the hull associated with it. The openings are all just too close a match.

That pretty much cinches it as far as I am concerned.

Jeff, you beat me to it.

When you look at the ordinary pic. of the 052D aft in # 3480, one can clearly see the weld-line just above the doors, that 'cuts' the hangar gap in two. The hangar is clearly made of two main sections placed on top of each other and welded together. Also the gaps for the doors and windows correspond with each other.

The grey structure could be the support structure for heavy helicopters. I think the helipad must be reinforced to cope with the sometimes hard landings of helicopters and such. Not mentioning the occasional use of the helipad as an open-air conference room or a place for temporary storage of disaster relief stuff etc.

Nice job on the comparisons

So the D's are in serial production. Be great if they can turn them out in the same length of time as the 4 052Cs.

A Video of the Type 52 arriving in Rio de Janeiro, 2013. Good voyage for our Chinese Brothers :)

If you want, just jump to 1,42 minutes to view the ships very close.

The second door to the starboard side of the helicopter hanger on the launched 052D appears to correspond to a window on the hull section. But otherwise the match does suggest two extremely similar ships.

A few good videos of the recent "maneuver 5" naval drills.

Funny how good the CIC of the 052B looks when the lights are dimmed down (as they should be in CICs during operation!)

The new shipboard standard of wearing the digital type 07 camo instead of the old and 20th century "baby blues" is also very good. Now, if only we can have anti flash gear as standard...
