re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

?_? Why do people assume quad-packed missiles on the 052D will be SR-SAM? If it has ~30km-50km range and provides local area air defense like ESSM, wouldn't be it a MRSAM?

for SR-SAM, 052D already got 24 cell FL-3000N anyway with range ~10kms

The 052D in the last few pictures look surprisingly 'small' in size as compared to the 054 frigate behind and to the human beings on shore!!!

The Type 052C

170 and 171 went to SSF

Then 150-153 went to ESF

Now Type 052D will go to SSF as 172 and 173 ( the 1st Type 052D above picture is likely going SSF to be 172)

Then 3rd Type 052D might go to NSF as 117 and the 4th in the hallway to NSF as 118

NSF is always last! they might even be more disappointed if they decided to give 3th and 4th units to SSF too

Liaoning needs a good escort they can do with Type 052D units

Well, from those pics you can see that the Type 052D is wider and sits somewhat higher. This pic:

...shows that the Type 052D is quite a bit longer and you can Se the massive difference in the bridge structure, and the sin gun. Plus we know that the Type 052D has twice the VLS cells.

Plenty of evidence in all of that for the Type 052D to be several thousand tons mor in displacement.

It appears to me type 052B/C/D hulls are one deck deeper than type 054 hulls. As a result, 052 hull would be much more voluminous. Also, relative to their respective hulls, the superstructure of 054 seems larger than the superstructure of 052. I am guessing this implies the 052 series have their combat information center buried in the hull, where as the 054 series have their CIC in the superstructure.

If that is the case, then I would further guess 052 series were design with considerably more emphasis on mission survivability than 054.

The bridge/superstructure of the 52C is much larger than that of the 54A. Wider and much taller to accommodate the APARs. Now, behind the main superstructure the 54A is longer relative to its overall length, so it appears larger...but in reality, I believe the structure above the main deck from amidships back to the landing deck is actually longer on the 52D than the 54A, and it is also wider.

Not sure where to put this question but I think this is the most relevant thread, 108 Xining was decommissioned several days ago. So does that mean there are about 7 type 051s left in active service?

There are eight 051 destroyers in service,
133 (commissioned in 1983),
134 (1984),
109 (1982),
110 (1984),
163 (1982),
164 (1987),
165 (1989),
166 (1997).

133, 109 and 163 have done 30 years of servie or more, these three are the most likely to be replaced soon when the new 052C and 052D enter service end of this year and 2014.
