re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

There are eight 051 destroyers in service,
133 (commissioned in 1983),
134 (1984),
109 (1982),
110 (1984),
163 (1982),
164 (1987),
165 (1989),
166 (1997).

133, 109 and 163 have done 30 years of servie or more, these three are the most likely to be replaced soon when the new 052C and 052D enter service end of this year and 2014.

note the CDF blog entry that says 163 has also been decommissioned this month.

I believe that may be a PS of an original picture. The signal flags indicate she is maneuvering at sea, but the background is coming out of port. Here is the original picture during D1s 1st trials

defnitely PSed of the original. All you have to look at the waves and the shadow and the angle of the ship They are pretty much identical except for some tiny changes. The person didn't even attempt to at least alter more parts of the vessel to make it believable. Sloppy work.

She is showing the flags Quebec Tango 1, which could simply be her identification signal.

Alternatively, the Quebec flag is internal standard for declaring the ship safe and requesting permission to enter or leave port, while tangle flag is standard for indicating the ship is engaged in maneuvers with another ship.

Either way the flags don't indicate unambiguously whether she is in port or at sea. But judging from the position of her stem anchor, I would say she has either just weighted anchor, or is about to drop her anchor, and is certainly not far out of port.

That picture is from D1 during her sea trials as shown and discussed in some detail here on this thread earlier.

You may want to do a little more homework regarding international nautical signal codes. Those three flags together represent a very specific message.

The top flag represents an "R", the middle flag represents a "U", and the bottom flag represents a "1". So the entire message is "RU1."

"RU1" in the international nautical signal language stands for "I am conducting maneuvering trials."

I stand corrected. I read misread each flags by one letter.

now I know China military-watchers have good reason to be PSphobic :) but that's not a PS. the details in the two photos don't match.

You certainly may well be right, which is why I said it only may have been a PS. Quite frankly, I was not sure.

On closer examination, the two pics do appear to be from a slightly different angle, which would mean they are in fact different photos. But my main point is that I am fairly positive that both pics are of D1 during her trials and the second is not of D2.

It can be PS because what are the chances that if two different pics, there happens to be a crew member right outside the starboard bridge and a crew member right in front of the main gun in both pics? That's too much coincidence.

OTOH, it could be two different pics of the same ship from the same trial but at two different moments, one still with port in backdrop, other after clearing port. I lean towards this theory after thinking about it for a while. :)
