re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

The 52D has to have a certain lifespan in order for the ship build to be cost effective.

Until then, there is no reason why a cruiser that size needs to be constructed.

IMO. a greater number of smaller, more nimble ships with engine upgrades would serve the china navy better than a 11000 ton variant.

Did PLAN use test ships to investigate possible problems with the current propulsion system or did they just select the US gas turbine and, when this was no longer available, put the Ukrainian GT in the next fighting ship?
I can imagine that the next system will be a GT electric generator of which a sufficient number will be used in a hull of a suitable size, three or four or five or... How many would be needed for a flattop? I imagine that for such a development a test ship is highly desirable.

Quite a modest VLS system compared to the Type 052C
32 VLS cells aft and 16 forward for a total of 48. A very decent area air escort.

I have the a 1/350 scale Shenyang and it will be one of my escorts for my PLAN ARG as soon as somone (probably Trumpeter) comes out with a Type 071 1/350 scale kit, which I will get two of. I intend to have the Shenyang, the Ningbo, two Type 054As and the two Yuzhao LPDs be a part of that group when the time comes.

Anhow, they do not have the APARs of the 052C, but they will be effective vessels just the same.

I rather see it start sooner rather than later to reduce that time transitioning from 052D to 055. Why the wish for such a transition? Because I think given the vision the Chinese Navy is pursuing, they will need higher tonnage ships.
I do not see a transition away from the 052C or 052D. Those vessels will be around for the next 30 years. I expect to see at least 8 052Ds, and believe they could easily use 12 to replace the destroyers they need to retire, and to adequately escort their higher value assets and still do the other duties they currently have...and are also expanding into as they become more blue water centric.

This does not negate the ability to build the 055 as soon as they are ready to do so, and have both. The US has kept 22 Ticonderoga Cruisers for over 25 years...and also built over 60, and ultimately will build over 70 somewhat smaller, but just about as capable Burke DDGs. Beginning later this decade, they will begin replacing the Ticos with the Flight III Burkes...a larger Burke similar to the Korean

I think you will probably see something similar with the PLAN before all is said and done. In total, more 052Cs and 052Ds combined than the number of 055s they build.

It will be interesting to see how soon they start, and what the actual design ends up looking like.
