Modern missile systems don't require direct line of sight and have better multi target engagement capabilities. However I am not certain about RAM & SeaRAM's 360 degree coverage capability vs VLS missiles like the Aster or ESSM.

CIWS guns require direct line of sight, and have inferior engagement range, multi target capability, plus the barrel will overheat from use. On the plus side, guns shot a stream of hot metal, carry a lot of ammo, and is easier to reload.

This photo must have been taken from some kind of overhead platform, like the roof of the bridge or something.

Yes, those are taken on the ship itself. The photographer is legit too and keeps a communist party membership card in the breast pocket. Don't you see a lot of these photos are deliberate leaks ?

How do they vent the heat exhaust, the VLS on 054 have their own exhaust doors.

CCL so I think just a concentric ring in the tube itself around the missile. Would the heat affect the missile?

Why is it a desperate need? much more important is getting ASW ships and assets. Thats what PLAN needs badly.

The exhaust is either a hollow 'vent ring' around the missile, or possibly no ring but the 4 corners are used to vent instead:




If the internal length/width of this CCL cannister is 850mm, a quad-packed missile would have about 220mm to work with minus whatever the ventilation ring requires. By comparison, an ESSM has a diameter of 254mm. We are probably looking at a quad-packed short range air defense missile with these kinds of lengths. A PL-12 has a diameter of 203mm. Maybe it could fit, and if a booster is developed for it, could possibly achieve medium-type ranges. It would definitely have to use the corner venting method though.

Wait, they can fit 4 missile in 1 tube? What is the diameter of each cell?
