LOL! But humor aside, that is a good question. Is it going to be 1000 then? With number four being 1001. Perhaps Tphuang can weigh in here. Any ideas?

I thought four digit numbers were reserved for smaller vessels?

They are, in principle for those vessels classified as 艇.

Anomalies in this: The Type 082 WOSAO class minesweepers, which started as 4422-4425, were promoted to 800-803.

The fairly large landing ships of the Type 074 YUHAI and 074A YUBEI classes have four-digit numbers (31xx, 32xx, 33xx) like the small YUNAN class landing craft.

I managed to find a reference to the LSM's: the three Hong Kong YUHAI's are 登陆艇:7593(074)、7594(074)、7595(074)

As to Type 071 YUZHAO class Hulls 3 and 4, expect them to be 988 and 989.

with 4 LPDs of this size China can send in a full Regiment/Brigade sized force to shores far away from home

a landing amphibous force of 3000-4000 soldiers is a pretty good punch, and considering China drills and drills landing amphiobus forces for day and night operations you can expect it to be a lethal blow to a enemy

plus 4 helos on each gives 16 helos in the air is well, say 8 x Z8s+ 8 x Z9s, we can see where China is heading, i guess all 4 will be operational by 2015-16, so will sit under the umbrella of a ex-Varyags air wing

don't forget most likely 2-3 Type 071 will be deployed not all 4.

i really wonder if Type 071 LPD can take 4 x Z8s on its platform simultanously

San Antonio LPD can land 4 x CH-46 all at the same time but its a narrow squeeze, inbetween the pitching and rolling of the deck, rotar blades flexing up and down while fighting strong winds 4 CH-46 fit on the rear deck with only 12 feet between the spinning rotar blades but they do it all the time and CH-46 is twin rotor is well

no doubt American Navy helo pilots are probably the best in the world at these things but it would be a good excersies if 4 x Z8 land on Type 071 LPD, i think its do-able

Z8 can carry 25 soldiers, 4 helos in a single wave could deploy 100 soldiers on each mission, very good for rapid insertion or saving lives in a humanitarian mission

I do not know about four Z-8, but when 998 was in the Arabian Sea, it carried two Z-8 and two Z-9.
