Well, we know 998 and 999 are out there with their pennant numbers. So this one I kept from your post may be the new one.

Is the fourth already under construction too? It seems I thought it was.

4 of these LPDs are a great addition to the PLAN capabilities...will they build more? I think they will. The US is building 12 similar vessels in the

Well, in Military Sea Lift Command, and in the 60,000 ton+ range you have three classes of vessel. One of these is probably what you are referring to

The Watson Class (8 ships)

The Bob Hope Class (7 ships)

The Gordon Class (2 Ships)

The Gordon is the largest at over 65,000 tons.

The Seal Lift Command then has many other classes for various purposes (from RoRo to Tankers and Crane Ships) at various displacements down to about 25,000 tons. Right at 100 ships altogether, most of them less than 20 years old.

These are not counted or included as offical US Navy Vessels. Usually manned by contractor personnel with a small Navy group onboard. Depending on the circumstances they may also be armed with weapons to repel pirates and have the gunnery mates or even Marines aboard to assist in that matter.

The largest is the LTC John U.D. Page class container ships which displace a whopping 74,500 tons each (2 Ships).

The Military Sealift Command is a huge service made up of various squadrons of vessels for various purposes from Prepositioning Ships, to Fast Seal Life ships, to Fleet Auxillary Ships, to Ready Reserve and Special Mission ships.

Military Sealift Command currently operates approximately 113 non-combatant, civilian-crewed ships worldwide. In addition, the command has access to 50 other ships that are kept in reduced operating status, ready to be activated if needed.

The MSC is a massive investment by America into the logistical realities of modern war. no other nation has come close to equaling it...and I don't believe any will in the near future. They are having a hard enough time affording their front line naval units.

With all of those Burkes and SSNs, the US also has the muscle to defend the convoys necessary to move those vessels and their military around. It all goes together.

Jeff ive found it it wasnt the Watson Class but the Algol Class, found it through the Sea lift link, they were the fast sea lift ships capable of doing 33 knots

it says these monsters transported 13% of all cargo between USA and Saudi Arabia for GW1, I think Gulf War 1991 was the biggest and largest sea lift operation in history in the space of time they did it in

Ok...you bet. Those are fast vessels...the fastest large military sea lift vessels in the world I believe.

The Algol class is a little smaller than those others, coming in at about 55,000 tons displacement. I was looking at the 60,000+ tons. Like most of the Military Sealif Command large vessels, they build eight of them a lot of times and there are eight of these. All eight of them together can carry pretty much all the equipment needed to outfit a full Army mechanized division with each iteration. So, if you have all eight involved, each time they turn around, a new division comes on-line.

Still, big monsters by any stretch, and very valuable vessels.
