re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

I share the universal admiration of their abilities and find their obvious lack of interest in awfully expensive hardware (they seemed to wave goodbye to the hideously expensive EFV with a light heart) and focus on the individual rifleman highly refreshing in the context of the US military.

Well, to be fair they really wanted to have EFV, but the financial situation as well as their evolving missions killed that dream, a friend of mine who was a LAV25 driver said the ZBD05 would be a huge improvement over what the Marines currently operate, I'm sure NORINC can do something about that:).

LCAC 3320 operating from 999? (doesn't look to be a PS)

a cousine of ZBD05 is a 105 mm assault gun. experiences in pacific war shows you need armour everywhere. especially on the first hour on the beach.

it would be interesting if USMC puts in some order for ZBD05. I am sure china would oblige.

huge opportunity to improve relations between militaries

The most important difference between LCM's and ACV's that I don't think has been mentioned, and is probably the main reason the US Marines prefer the LCAC over the LCM, is the ability of the ACV to hold a larger proportion of an enemy's coastline at risk as it can assault beaches the LCM could not even dream of landing on. This complicates the enemy's defense planning immensely and gives an advantage to the assault force.

What do you mean by "holding a larger proportion of the enemy's coastline"? Just curious.

No, he's says "holding ... coastline at risk". In other words an ACV can land on a wider variety of terrain, which means the enemy has to spread its defenses thinner.

I see...thanks for clarifying it.

this pic reminds me, can Type 071 LPD re-fuel helicopters without touch down? I know Royal Navy practices re-fueling the Merlin while it hovers around 10-15 metres above the flight deck while doing 22 knots, its a very hard task and useful for when the deck is not clear to land and helo needs a emergency fuel
