Its a major improvement from the days of the 2019 HK Riots aftermath. Nevertheless, its still a slim majority (53%) of Taiwanese who don't trust America. Another 47% apparently do, or are neutral. But this majority cannot be counted to be the end of the Wanwanese as a major political force. Another Sunflower Revolution, and the scales could tip back to the Wanwanese. If anything, China needs to double-down on its charm offensive, and counter-intelligence operations in Taiwan.

Jeez a whole two days' drive to the airport?! After barely a week at the job pulling out a grand total of 3 people and one of them didn't even survive to boot? Can't even imagine the "extremely difficult" ordeal! The Taiwanese SAR team have my sympathies.

Didn’t they saw off a person’s limb to extract her? I think that’s the person who unfortunately couldn’t make it.

To be fair though any chance of survival is very remote at this stage. If more teams stay they are just using up space and resources.

Charm offensive is useless. 国台办 has been doing that for decades.
What changed is the military threat has become real with the military exercises after the Pelosi visit
Mainland should do more of them

Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) A woman who was rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building by the Taiwan Search & Rescue Team in Turkey Wednesday night died shortly afterwards at a local hospital, according to the Taipei City Fire Department on Thursday.

She was pronounced dead by a doctor at around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday local time after efforts to resuscitate her failed, Liao Wan-ju (廖婉如), a medical advisor with the department whose members are part of the team, said during a press conference in Taipei.

The team, which worked alongside Turkish rescuers, heard the sound of the woman trapped under rubble at around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday while working in Turkey's Adiyaman Province.

At one point during the rescue mission, the woman lost vital signs.

It took five hours for the rescue team to pull her from the collapsed building at around 8:40 p.m. after a field amputation was performed. Rescuers subsequently were able to revive the woman and rushed her to a nearby hospital at 9:20 p.m.

Wang Tse-yao (王則堯), a physician who was at the scene, had initially sought to preserve the woman's limb but as time was of the essence it was decided to amputate the limb to save her life, Liao explained.

"It was a critical situation," she said, as individuals trapped under rubble for extended periods of time are prone to developing compartment syndrome.

When this occurs, high levels of potassium in the blood due to rhabdomyolysis can lead to cardiac arrest after a person is extricated from the rubble when blood flow suddenly returns, Liao added.

Liu Kuei-yu (劉奎佑), deputy chief of Taipei City Urban Search & Rescue, said the woman's left leg was amputated below the knee.

The search and rescue mission in Turkey has proven to be quite challenging due to the extremely cold weather in the country, with temperatures falling below zero degrees Celsius at night, Liu said.

That challenge is topped by the "pancake mode" collapse of the buildings which forces rescue workers to work in tight spaces as they try to pull survivors from the rubble, he added.

Yeah, and I have two more fvcking questions for the guy as well:
3. What fvcking terminal stage of capitalism is this?!
4. The fvcking fvck is going down at the Ivy Leagues?!

Also, what a "journalism" you've got there, NYT.

Most importantly, whoever can utter this kind of words and still be promoted and admired upon by the commoners in one society, he/she can only come from that society which is suffering from terminal decline and serious decay.

Why let the elderly go to waste like this? Wouldn’t it be better to send them on banzai charges in an open conflict with China? This way you can get the maximum utility out of the useless elderly before getting rid of them.

Oh I almost forgot do remember to harvest any useful organs they have before they kick the bucket.

After digging (sorry) into this some more, it seems the Taiwanese team was "asked" to leave for reasons unexplained other than a local team had arrived to take over rescue effort -

Taiwan's search and rescue team was politely invited away Professor Tu Guoye: very sad

Taiwan's search and rescue team went to the disaster-stricken area in Turkey. They suspected that they had found the survivor's location. Unexpectedly, Adiyaman's local unit entered the excavation and asked the Taiwan search and rescue team to "please leave politely." At that time, a Turkish professor named Yemasi who was teaching in Taiwan volunteered to be an interpreter and coordinated in the middle. During the process, Yemasi said sadly that he felt that the local unit seemed to want to take credit for it. Therefore, the Fire Department responded today (12th) that Taiwan's search and rescue team puts disaster relief first, with the original intention.

Meanwhile the Chinese (including HK) teams are still on-site conducting rescues -

An interesting episode occurred between the Chinese and Japanese teams seemingly about operating one of JP team's equipment. The CN team lead asked the Japanese if they wanted to go inside the rubble together. The JP team lead went: "It's too dangerous", and offered to 'teach' the Chinese how to operate their equipment instead -
