Terrorist commander who is Russian tweeted that they downed "cargo plane" same time when Malaysian plane was shot down. Not really that hard to figure what happened.

So the Eastern rebels shot down the plane, not the Russian federation.

It will be hard to tell who shot it down considering all the parties involved in the Ukraine conflict are going to try to blame it on the other side. Considering that Russian jets supposedly shot down one of Kiev's Su-25s yesterday there is potential for Kiev's forces to be shooting at aircraft as well.

If civilian airliners have been flying over Ukraine as if everything is normal then there is plenty of blame to go around beyond the actual combatants who shot this plane down.

Here is a more neutral report I posted over in the world news thread:

Malaysian Airlines again!? This is a really bad year for them.

KIEV Thu Jul 17, 2014 11:58am EDT

(Reuters) - A Malaysian airliner was shot down over eastern Ukraine by militants on Thursday, killing all 295 people aboard, a Ukrainian interior ministry official was quoted as saying by Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

The aircraft, which other sources said was a Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, came down near the city of Donetsk, stronghold of pro-Russian rebels, Anton Gerashchenko said, adding that it was hit by a ground-to-air missile.

There was no further confirmation of the report, although Ukrainian officials said local residents had found wreckage.

Malaysia Airlines said on its Twitter feed it had lost contact with its flight MH-17 from Amsterdam. "The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace," it said.

Gerashchenko was quoted as saying: "A civilian airliner travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has just been shot down by a Buk anti-aircraft system ... 280 passengers and 15 crew have been killed."

Interfax-Ukraine quoted another Ukrainian official as saying the plane disappeared from radar when it was flying at 10,000 metres (33,000 feet), a typical cruising altitude for airliners.

It came down at Torez, near Shakhtersk, some 40 km (25 miles) from the Russia border. The area has been the scene of fighting between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian rebels.

Ukraine has accused Russia of taking an active role in the four-month-old conflict in recent days and accused it earlier on Thursday of shooting down a Ukrainian fighter jet - an accusation that Moscow denied.

So the Eastern rebels shot down the plane, not the Russian federation.

Rebels are controlled by Russia (leaders are Russian) and therefore Russia is to be blamed from this act of terrorism. It was yesterday when Russians posted pictures of BUK SAM systems in terrorist hands and bragged how those vehicles were gained with Russians help. Now none of these Russians apparently even know that terrorists have such weapons.... surprise.

The reported crash site seems to be smack dab in the middle of the warzone, the so-called "southern cauldron". The plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur... why the hell did it fly into a warzone???

Google Maps gives this flight path:

It passes nowhere near the reported crash site.

Something is really, really fishy here!

That's just a point A to point B abstract line, not an actual flight path. Not saying that it can't turn out to be fishy, just that this isn't the evidence to show that.

With all the AAAs and SAMs peppered all over the area I would try and avoid flying on ANY airline that has flight paths taking me over eastern Ukranian airspace..

just sayin!

There is obviously a big difference between a 4 prop An 26 flying at a couple of thousand meters and a Boeing 777 flying at 10,000. If any SAM capable of hitting such aircraft is in the hands of rebels, they obviously have somebody experienced in its use, otherwise it would be impossible to operate. Such people would be able to tell the difference, esp if high altitude commercial flights are an every day occurrence.

The first thing to establish surely is whether one or two planes have come down in the vicinity.

Very tragic event for the wholly innocent passengers and crew. I also cannot understand why Airliners were not being diverted around the warzone.

It's too early to make claims. If you look at the video of the smoke plume, that looks like a lot a fuel burning in a one concentrated area for an aircraft that was supposedly blown apart at 30,000 feet. Also no smoke trail leading down to the ground leading to where the video shows the plume at the beginning stages. You'd figure there would be a rain of smoke trails if it was blown apart in mid air.

Without getting into country bashing territory, both sides have received outside supports. Any blood lost in the conflict can be attributed to either faction's backers. From my understanding, about 20% of Ukrainians have duel citizenships and many of them are rebels located in the East. Rebel leaders have secondary Russian citizenships, it doesn't mean that whatever crimes they committed are the responsibilities of Russian Federation. If that's case, every weapon exporters are going to be guilty of some unsavory actions committed by their customers.

"We don't have weapons what can shoot that high". Except of course BUK.

This is the MH17 flight path.

If you checked the flight paths of the previous flights, it usually went over Crimea away from the conflict area.
