For anyone interested, here is the official VK (Russian Facebook) page of the rebel leader, Igor Strelkov.

I read some of it using Google translate. He pretty much denied the accusation circulating on twitter that he admitted to the shoot down of Malaysian jet. I would think that he probably would have announced any jet shot down by rebels on VK first before on twitter.

Basically, nobody knows who's responsible at this point.

Here's what's been deleted from the account right after the aircraft crushed - 'We warned you - don't fly in 'our skies'' and 'Birdie fell on the scrap-heap, not in the living area' when they thought that they got Ukrainian An-26.

Similar thing happened when some careless Russian guy filmed Grad (BM-21) rocket launchers firing from the Russian side of the border and people got immediately recognized that place without a doubt towards Ukrainian troops on the video below. His account on VKontakte had been deleted immediately after that but the video remained in the web.

This is no doubt a very, very bad year for Malaysian Airlines.

Was the flight path on 17/7 still within the civil aviation flight corridor?

Some are already drawing comparisons to KLA 007. when a Korean Airlines 747 was Shot down by a Russian SU15 ( almost made the Classic Mistake of calling it a MIG)

Also interested in the answer. Do we have any experts on civil aviation here at sinodefence? Anybody that can shed some light on this.

One thing that has been bothering me about this. If MH17 needed to divert in order to avoid bad weather or thunderstorms, why the pilots or air traffic control chose to divert the plane north towards the conflict zone instead of south over Black Sea.

One apt aspect of comparison is if the Malaysian airlines flight had deviated from its flight path like the Korean Airlines flight did. But that shoot down occurred during a known military standoff while this one occurred over a known hot warzone, it is a subtle difference but still a significant one.

Well, I'm no expert in aviation, civilian or military; however, judging from the map above, the MH17 on July 17 has flown into the airspace of a stronghold of a military group. So, what would you expect a military group to do when an unknown aircraft fly above their head? I believe the pro-Russian military are not terrorist and they do not enjoy killing civilian. The MH17 was part of the blame.
