Did the Japanese minister use the words "disputed territory" or their Japanese equivalent?
That would, I think, be a significant diplomatic change.

If the Japanese minister actually said "disputed territory," then the Chinese should be willing to get back to the negotiating table. It's huge if it's an actual quote.

there isn't much to negotiate at this point and besides things are just about to get interesting and fun. consider these a good warm up exercise for china they need it.

It is not anything "normal" at all. If similar thing happened during let's say Japan-US exercise and China sent a surveillance plane, it would have been defined as aggressive. That's all.

Sorry...but it is normal.

China, the US, Japan, Korea, Russia, etc., etc. do this all of the time.

If an aircraft pentrates to closely to exercises, an interception will occur.

Nothing wrong with that, and nothing abnormal about it.

It is also not antiquated.

Large powers are always trying to find out what the capabilities of potential adversaries are. Many times they use electronic aircraft to do this, particularly during exercises like this where vessels may be emoitting with their sensors.

The press is always going to make a deal of it.

Now, somehting like what happened several years ago with the US P-3 where the China aircraft collided with it...that is out of the ordinary and overly aggressive. But also not unheard of.

But this was nothing like that with a spacing of 150+ feet.

its just the Japanese govt making it into an anti china propaganda saying the Chinese were aggressive.

Care to share one instance where China fly close to a Japan-USA exercise?

If PLAAF and PLANAF Flankers and/or other air assets haven't been glued to US and JP exercises (which isn't believable), then they’re missing out on golden opportunities to spy and harass their US antagonists and JP enemies. American officials have invited reciprocation from PLAx, so go ahead and take them up on it.

To be fair I don't think they have.. at least not close range. Certainly not close like the Soviet Navy or even the Iranian aircrafts flying close to US Navy ships.

well they barely had a navy or an airforce until quite recently. but it looks like they are going to happily play that game from now on. they only established their ADIZ this year while the Japanese had theirs for what a few decades?? and the Japanese are such drama queens and calling the Chinese provocative.

It's like a game of basketball when you're losing to a better team you looked to the referee for help to bail you out with a cheap foul call when there wasn't any, and than complain and make seen about it.
