J-15 is likely to have catapult-launch abilities since the PLAN wants it to be a long-term fighter until the 5G jets come into service.

With the development of the J-15B as well as the J-15S (there's a rumored J-15G for EW), it's pretty clear that they are planning ahead for its entry into service for at least a decade.
I expect the service life of these J-15 aircraft of various varities in to be more like 25+ years in PLAN Naval Air service aboard its carriers.

If they build the two-seater strike version, and continue to upgrade and improve the single seater...and then add a dedicated EW version (like the E/A-18 Growler in US Navy service) then you can bet that 10 years would not nearly be enough to justify all of that. Those J-15s are here to stay for a good many years...and they will be fine aircraft.

The F-18 Hornet, which has been superceded by the Super Hornet for quite a few years now, and will be replaced in full by the F-35, has already seen 35 years of service. Why? Because it is such a good, well rounded, and multi-role platform. The Super Hornet will carry on in that tradition, and then the JSF, Lightning II behind it.

I expect the J-15 will fit that same mold.

Ok my Chinese is very bad, especially listening so excuse me for asking:

Around 1:42, it is written that:
1) At present the J-15 has been prepared for catapult launch?
2) Therefore, future (some characters I don't understand) J-15s could work with both steam and electro-magnetic catapults?

And FarkTypeSoldier please keep providing us with translations and the videos! It's a great source of knowledge and for me a great way to practise my Chinese!

You guys are most welcomed! :)

Under cockpit ? You mean on the belly of the aircraft or inside cockpit on the floor ?

I have followed up thunderchief's request.

Have a nice weekend guys...

I try post a pic tomorrow. It'd hard to post on my mobile now

Perhaps I didn't stated properly, the Chinese flag is painted on the fuselage outside of the air frame, not in the belly.

I thought so too...

However as and when in the future indigenious Chinese carrier, when there are other new models available, that would be interesting to see J-15 + other new model combination.

Just my 2 cents

Come on guys...do we have to go there?

We have good Japanese members of our forum too, who contribute here. We want to maintain a civil, professional relationship for all members. I am sure a derogatory, demeaning cartoon about the Chinese President would not be appreciated and would anger some.

So let's just try to stay away from that stuff.

I agree 100%, and also look forward to seeing what they come up with.

If they continue on and develop a 3-5 operational carrier force, I expect at some point, the PLAN will have two strike/fighter aircraft. They will have an AEW platform at some point that is fixed wing. They will probably have a dedicated EW aircraft (probably a two-seat J-15 derivative), and they will have ASW and SAR helicopters.

Time will tell, but it will be interesting and exciting to see them develop all of that.

I fully expect to see the J-31 fully developed for Combat Air Patrol, while the J-15s will do fine, if they ever face the F-35, they will have a very difficult go of it, and that is why the rush for the J-20 and the surprise first flight of the J-31 shortly after it was driven through town on the back of a flatbed under a tarp. Even if the F-35 is not up to Raptor standards, it will be a lot more fun to fly than somebody elses 4 gens, or even 4 gen+, it will make a believer out its skeptics in a hurry, that is one area of "need" for the PLANAF and PLAAF

the cartoon was originally published by the Financial Times, not by a tabloid. IMO, it actually got to the core of the issue. as for if it is demeaning, I don't think anyone here believes US & JP are equal partners.

I'm not as optimistic as you, sir. Though China is very rich now, their GDP is still very low compared to those developed countries. In earlier discussion, the operational cost of a carrier is about 1 million US dollar a day, that is 365 million a year. If 5 carriers, it would be somewhere near 2 billion a year. Even though China has that money, they should save it for other purposes.

Further, I'm late to read those deleted posts. Don't know what they were about. However, I'm afraid China is success in creating their new ADIZ because I read the news that Japan said that it absolutely deny the new ADIZ but will allow its airline companies to choose to submit flight plan to Chinese authorities for flight safety purposes. The Chinese are very careful of what they're doing, and once they do it, they're confident in success.

1st, I never said or implied it was from a tabloid.

2nd, as I said, if a similarly derogatory cartoon was posted regarding the Chinese President, it would not be appreciated and would inflame...and it would suffer the same fate that one did here on SD.

We do not need to go there on either side of the issue here on SD..
