Not being an expert on these things, may someone explain why Aviation Week's Bill Sweetman wrote that China made a mistake in not making a STOVL variant? How would he know and why is that impotant this early on? I mean Richard Fisher has been writing that China is developing their own F-35B. That would about as accurate as making the assumption that China has no plan for STOVL variant.

I think STOVL fighter technology is very difficult for China right now, china still need to import Russia engine.
do you remember this guy? here is his picture:

It was in the same article from Aviation Week I posted before but he wrote this in the comments section.

Ah right. To be honest I think he's kinda just trollin even though he's an expert and everything. Like mao said china doesn't have the engine technology to make STOVL and a STOVL fighter as their first 5th gen one would be a massive risk.
It won't bite the PLAAF in the ass anymore than the fact that the USAF didn't choose to make F-22 STOVL.

All need is an bird's eye-view of the plane and we'll know exactly what it looks like!!!

U.S. Spy satellites please cooperate with us here...

Does anyone know how to use Google Maps? The airstrip should be a known location. We all know that Google doesn't like the Chinese government. Perhaps they've taken a picture already!

Anyway, for anyone that's interested, here's a magnified version of the latest picture.

Interesting... From the front at least, it looks more like the F-22 than the T-50. It's not as "blended" as the T-50... I wonder how that will effect it's performance relative to the T-50 and F-22 (Ahhhh it feels so satisfying to be able to compare this plane with the Raptor and PAK FA directly :D )

I'm definitely disappointed in the lack of blending (the intake looks a little too big and tall), but we'll have a much better idea of the design when we get better pictures.

So far, the interesting thing about this aircraft is that...it appears more Western than Russian. The T-50 still has a distinctive Flanker look to it.

The J-20 is closer in appearance to the F-22

For those who think that'd be too much work to go into faking it just to screw Pinkov, perhaps you chaps forgot that bald guy once made a wager in calling China can't roll out 4th-generation (by Western standard) fighters within 4 years, and he'd have Kanwa close down the Chinese publishing if he was wrong...if I remember correctly that wager is close to the deadline and I won't be surprised that those in China want to take a swing at someone that draw a lot of their hate.

He lack the balls to bet with you on this. (Probably a She, in fact) :D

For one I'm dead broke to make a bet, and for two it's just too early to call it real deal.

See, if they want to give a display for the leaders, if it need not for a demo flight they don't need to toll it outside, just do it inside a hanger would be sufficient; neither would there be any need to toll a mockup outside.

And not just it's too early to call, the level of wishful thinking displayed here is...disturbing. Besides, the insignia on the tailfin is non-standard, and PLAAF has the standard enforced quite strictly; colors ain't primer and neither the standard air-superiority scheme used across the board. RAM material? Perhaps but why not in the standard air-superiority scheme, like the Americans'?

Until there're clearer pics and better, at takeoff/landing ones, I maintain my stand in not taking them for real.

I found it pretty easy. I just typed in Chengdu, China and looked around for a second and it's located almost due West about NWW of where Google Maps takes you.
