from what I hear, it was su-27 that they sent over there. Really wasn't a huge deal from plaaf perspective. And it was also the earliest Russian made ones rather than later upgrades

Could those still fly? I read on a Chinese news article in May that PLAAF already started retiring some of the earliest batches of the Su-27 that they received. The flankers aren't exactly meant to last a long time.

the link A.Man posted is actually quite significant.

Just some really quick thought on these photos. We finally get some really nice photos of production J-11BS for PLANAF and PLAAF (I believe the light colored ones are for the navy and the dark colored ones are for the air force). Since the canopies are covered, so I can't tell if they are all J-11BS, but the uncovered ones are all so. I'm not sure if they have just stopped producing J-11B and shifted to J-11BS, since J-11B can't compete with the cost/capability ratio of J-10A and J-10B. J-11BS will be also tasked with anti-shipping missions and long range strike missions that J-10 simply don't have the payload/range to do.

Good to see that the engines on these flankers all seem to be WS-10A. From the J-11BS still in primer, it looks like the vertical stabilizer is all made of composite material.

Now, what I didn't post is a picture showing a J-8II in primer. I guess they are still in production too.

Will the J-11BS be used by PLANAF or PLAAF? If it is the latter will JH-7A be in trouble?

Good pictures, though I really don't understand why the PLAAF like their fighters to have "black noses," surely it won't be that good for keeping a low visual visibility.

One really silly question, why do some of their J-11B's canopy and nose being covered up? If they wanted to cover, why don't they simply covered the entire body of the J-11B, only the canopy and nose?

If you could post the J-8II picture the ol' J-8 thread then that would be great!

As for the J-11BS' FINALLY getting the WS-10As, this shows a significant increase in confidence of with the engine. I'm still not sure about service though, some people are saying these new WS-10A equipped J-11BS' will be just for training? Either way though this is a major milestone for China's engine development, developing an indigenous engine is a massive hurdle to have finally cleared.

Some have green nose or lighter grey nose. Apparently the radars of different coloured noses are different with black ones having the most advanced indegenous radar. (or so I was told anecdotally)

Maybe something to do with these parts being sensitive to weather, moisture(?)
They also cover the exhaust and engine inlets, I don't think it's a secrecy thing.
