I agree. However, with facial features being more complex than fingerprint, facial recognition has more potential to become more secure. Because of the simplicity of the fingerprint, we are most likely at the peak of fingerprint technology. Facial recognition may be the future...

Let's wait and see how the iPhone X behaves... I will definitely get one. Hopefully, it won't be as bad as what happened at the demonstration a few weeks back...

do you have an indentical twin bro? LOL

Hahaha, unfortunately, I don't have an evil twin. However, I have worked/studied with identical twins before. When I was in college, I went to classes with a set of identical twins (clinically identified as monozygotic twins, i.e. the most identical twins as you can get) . At first, I couldn't tell them apart even when both of them stood in front of me. But after a little while, I started to see distinctions between them. I could tell which brother he was even when only one of them was there. If my naked eyes could tell them apart, sophisticated softwares can do it easily.

On the other hand, can you tell differences in fingerprint between two different individuals with only your eyes?

So facial features should be more distinct than fingerprint. We just need better software to take advantage of that.

Hopefully, iPhone X has it... Fingers crossed!

Are you 100% sure the reason you were able to tell them apart is strictly based on facial features and genetic markers ONLY and not due to 'other' subconcious observations or non tangible markers like personality, mannerism, voice, body language, hairstyle, teeth, bad breath, odor ... or maybe one twin cusses more than the other or thousand other minute factors, anyway you get my point.

I am not... I have to admit that it may involve other factors.

However, if "identical" twins can have so many distinct features, as you listed above, it would not be surprising for them to have distinguishable facial features. It's the same genetic makeup that give them non tangible markers like personality, mannerism, voice, body language, hairstyle, teeth, bad breath, odor... (well, maybe not hairstyle...)

Actually, monozygotic (i.e. "identical") twins do not always look identical. They may look very similar to someone unfamiliar with them, but they do have facial differences that people who are familiar can pick up right away.

I have two 7-month-old identical twin girls. :)

That's why facial recognition alone won't be the way for the near future especially in a portable device at least. It's going to come down to be a combination probably including the good ole password... Frankly I think it's just more to show something new and nifty to sell to customers. A portable device with important information using facial recognition... What's to stop a criminal from forcing you to look into your iPhone to unlock it or how about your unconscious/dead body? One of the fears was also your device will have all the information identifying your face which people who steal or hack the iPhone will now have.

I'm a minimalist and more a utilitarian kinda person. a thumb print works just fine for me. it's practical.. it takes literally 1/8 a second to unlock since my hand would allready be on the phone anyway

FR requires more processing power, and requires me to grab my phone, then place it at face levelor look directly at it even for it to unlock.

If I'm driving or whatever else, I can unlock using my thumb and feel w/o ever looking at it.

i'm old school I guess.

I don't think any normal security features would be useful against a violent criminal. What's to stop them from forcing you to simply give them your password? Would you actually say "no I won't give you my password" when a gun is pointed at your head?
