Z-20 (all variants) thread

I think PLA is trying to develop a bigger helicopter capable of being stored on-board the present frigate and destroyer in the PLAN. I recalled that Jeff try to to jam a folded-up blackhawk into the hanger of the 054a frigate (models of course) a year or two back. The present PLAN helicopters on both the frigates and destroyers are really puny and don't do justice to the warships. Just my two cents.
All the newer PLAN frigates and destroyers has tall hangers to accommodate the very tall Ka-27, and the blackhawk's design is characteristic for its low profile, I don't think the conditions match?

It sure will be interesting to see what Sikorsky choose to do, if anything.

I'm sure China would have gladly paid Sikorsky for blackhawks up front if not for the embargo

I afraid the price will be sky high rocket if import from US.

of course it would have as the seller would have had to risk everything to illegally export a controlled product to a nation under embargo..

guys I stand corrected on this. But lets take a look at the end product.
the tail and engines remind me of Z10 as does the rotor.

They did inquire about a assembly line in china a while back

Sikorsky and UTC said would be glad to do it but sadly USG said no.

another reason Bell moved much of its civil products to separate line in Bell Canada is because the stupid US export restrictions.

The short helicopter wouldn't fit into a tall hangar? Is that what you are saying?

The fuselage on this one is fatter than the Blackhawk. It also has a vertical stabilizer at the end and the exhaust is different. The front nose section is more rounded than the Blackhawk as well. I don't know if the doors and the windows are different are not, need more clearer pictures.

China itself is actually not under embargo. If you read the trade rules, technically only PLA is. as even civilian agency, such as ministry of transportation and SAR helo are greenlighted.
even the firefighting branche of People's Armed Police is greenlighted.

Its the stupid ToT that is killing the business. the business has to certify every part of a machine is not military. or if it is dual use then a license has to be applied for. huge cost and waste of time.

On Dec. 23, at 14.11 Local Time, the Chinese medium lift utility helicopter dubbed Z-20 made its first flight.

As the image (published on a Chinese Internet website and then made available by Alert5) shows, the chopper is clearly based on the U.S. Black Hawk. China operates 24 of the Sirkosky variety procured in 1983 as S-70C-2.

Still, the Z-20 features a 5-blade rotor, a larger cabin and a different landing gear and tail.

Z-20 is believed to be a 10-ton chopper that will be used to replace Mi-17 and Mi-171 helos within People’s Liberation Army.

It would, just won't be "bigger". I was thinking that if this is developed to be a "bigger helicopter capable of being stored on-board the present frigate and destroyer in the PLAN" (from the post I was replying to) they wouldn't choose a short-and-wide body configuration. But if this is navalized in the future it may allow future PLAN ships to save some vertical space on hangers. Maybe it will also squeeze into hangers designed for Z-9? I don't know.
