Given the range, possible threats. a thousand attack choppers is way more then China needs and he any thing would be more a hindering factor. a lot of the air attack missions would be better filled with fixed wing craft which have longer range, higher speed and larger war loads attack choppers are better in closer to the troops. A thousand overall built for China and export to Chinese allied nations sounds better to me. With the PLAAF buying multi role and ground attack craft like the JF7

Army aviation troop units staged an air confrontation drill of armed helicopters at the end of April in north China to verified air combat tactics of the new-type armed helicopters under complex weather conditions.

If I'm not mistaken, the WZ-10 closest in the picture (far left), the camo on the gunship is dark/forest green and not black.

The fact that the paint is non reflecting low IR combined with the bright light of the photos and the shadow produced by the aircraft its self "darken" the look of the ship. You see the same effect on most US army aircraft which are painted green with white markings. You have to get just the right conditions to actually see the real paint color.

1000 Z10s?! That's more than the number of Apaches the US and NATO has in service.

Even 500 seems excessive when you consider that China does not see itself fighting a large scale land war anytime soon.

For peace time, a standing force of 300-400 Z10s should be plenty. If the PLA is going to make a big expansion in its rotor wing assets, transport and utility helicopters would be far more useful to buy in huge numbers.

How many WZ-10 does China have now and China want ?

Anyone knows ?

Wikipedia say that China has only 60 WZ-10

Hard to tell but 60 could be an accurate guess. Introducing a new and complicated weapons system like the WZ-10 takes time. Look at how difficult its proven for the South Africans to get the Rooivalk into service, same with the Russians and the Mi-28 (even though the country was starved of money at the time). Now the latter is coming into service in greater numbers, though its still slow going.

The '60' came from the fact that WZ-10s had been spotted in 5 different different LH regiments (and with a 6th one in the offing) with 5 serial number sets each. Each regiment typically has 12 birds so that's the educated guess. It's always possible that some of the regiments are not full - that would not be the first time for helicopters, as the PLA appears more interested in getting pioneer units in each military regions to familiarise the locals with the doctrinal and logistical changes that incorporating a modern aviation element brings.

there's been talk of WZ-16 ATH.I speculate is that if PLA wanted twin 1500~2000 plus HP attack helos.the entire airframe has to undergoes redesign .
while WZ-10 was first step for PLA for modern attack helos, but there real objective was AH-64D type heavy attack helos.experience in the gulf war prove it.her heavy weapon load, sensor, protection, range and durability make AH-64 the most potent attack helos right now.
