I agree that bias is probably the wrong word. It wasn't intended as disrespect is any case.

However, if Capt. Carlson is reading and posting to this forum, perhaps he can address the two outstanding issues raised about his articles.

1) His lower rang estimation for YJ-18.

I would also be very interested in that.

The 220km range estimate has been thrown around a number of sites for a little while now, and I have a feeling that the estimate is based on a few faulty premises.

I wonder how many units of the improved Yuan are out there. This one was spotted in Shanghai...

So after the SSNs I'm here with the SSKs as well. Since I've got some time now during the last days of the year, I'm doing a little chatching up, going through the various threats and other sites.
Subs, though, remains a murky topic for me.

Of all the Yuan class subs, I was under the impression that 15 are in service, and have been for about a year now. But no follow on since then.

I now understand the last three of those 15 Yuans are 039C variants. Is that correct, with them all comissioned for a year or more by now? Which would mean there's currently a pause in comissioning new SSKs.

The first 4(?) are the basic A and the following 8 are AG or B, where probably all of them have been upgraded to B standart right now.

Yuan, comparisons btw different variants

The Type 039A / B / C are the indigenous submarine propulsion diesel / electric the newest of the Chinese arsenal. The first pictures of a Type 039A, the 330 appeared in late 2004. The following three submarines (331, 332, 333) differ in some details of the first copy by including the location of the superstructures of garbage and size kiosk windows. The shape of the Type 039A seems to be inspired by the Russian Project 636M.

The Type 039B is a slight change in its forms in relation to Type 039A, upper kiosk including rounding. The number of oil changes superstructures decreased and the location of some changed.

On the Type 039C corners disappeared, the kiosk integrates with the hull. Once again the location of some garbage superstructure was changed. Three bands appeared at the top of the booth.

Are there any estimate on how loud yuan is compared to e.g. virginia class or gotland class?

A Yuan running on AIP should be quieter than a Virginia. A Yuan running on diesels would presumably be the same or louder?

The Yuan should be fairly similar to the Gotland in most operating regimes, as they use the same MTU diesels and the same Stirling AIPs.

Realistically that is still questionable since the power plant is only part of the equation on how silent the sub runs with the other part of the equation of how much countermeasures had been initiated into dampening noise and resonance.
Rubber panels and bushes are only the start. You need to incorporate a way to stop resonance of the hull which is like a steel bell if you do not stop resonance of the hull consisting of a single material.
