Perhaps im mistaken in my belief that pigs organs/physiology resembled closely to that of humans soI wonder why they dont test drugs destined for humans on pigs.

Drug From Chinese ‘Thunder God Vine’ Slays Tumors in Mice

"A drug made from a plant known as “thunder god vine,” or lei gong teng, that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine, wiped out pancreatic tumors in mice, researchers said, and may soon be tested in humans.

Mice treated with the compound showed no signs of tumors after 40 days or after discontinuing the treatment, according to researchers at the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center. The research, funded by the university and the National Institutes of Health. was published today in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

“This drug is just unbelievably potent in killing tumor cells,” said Ashok Saluja, vice chairman of research at the center and the study’s leader, said in a telephone interview. “You could see that every day you looked at those mice, the tumor was decreasing and decreasing, and then just gone.”

The plant, also known as Tripterygium wilfordii, contains triptolide, which earlier studies have shown can cause cancer cells to die. In traditional Chinese medicine, the plant is used as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. While the researchers hope to start human trials in six months, Saluja said it’s still a long leap from mice to people.

“Does that mean it will definitely work in humans?” he said. “We can definitely not say that.”

The results pave the way for clinical trials in patients with pancreatic cancer, one of the most lethal malignancies, the researchers said in the study. About 44,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed each year in the U.S., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Only about 20 percent of patients survive a year after .................."

The advantage of using mice is that these have a very short generation time. But that means a short life and a relatively simple defense against infections and cancer. The advantage of pigs is that they have a somewhat longer generation time, but still pretty short and so they don't resemble people well enough to spend effort on them before going to human trials.

Hmmm interesting I recall reading a proposal concerning the posibility of transplanting pig organs(forgotten which ) into humans.

On another note i thought you might have appreciated my link to the NZ trimaran with the winged foil.

I just heard yesterday it wiped out. boo hoo sob sob

I read it too. You need to genetically manipulate some pig strain, and protect it against infection, so that it will not incite a rejection response in the reciever. It will take a "few" years I suppose but would provide us with organs of the right size.

I'm sorry but I forgot to thank you. But this wing sail like nearly all others I've seen too closely resembles aircraft wings while the purpose is so very different.
Btw be happy that that wing sail was destroyed. If it had been strong enough to survive being slapped against the sea surface the boat would have been destroyed and the loss would likely have included the lives of the crew. And of course it would have been much too heavy.

Phew its all good It was the American boat that was nearly totaled.Under the rules they cant launch another boat until next year, so now I will sit back and watch them cheat.

one place that can get very rough for the cats is Qingdao, .

Its going to be a long hall for Team China. Although they have raced in the earlier events, Im not sure whether they have paid for the actual Cup regatta. They've being going around for the last 8yrs, and while their seems little problems with finance, theyre trailing in the skills required at that level.

NASSAU (Reuters) - Slow-moving Hurricane Sandy, a late season Atlantic storm unlike anything seen in more than two decades, slogged toward the U.S. East Coast on Friday after killing at least 31 people on a trail of destruction across the Caribbean.

Forecasters said the storm, with an expanding wind field already 550 miles wide, had begun merging with a polar air mass over the eastern United States, potentially spawning a "hybrid" super storm that could wreak havoc along the U.S. East Coast.

"Its structure is evolving as we speak because it's interacting with this weather feature at higher levels of the atmosphere," said Todd Kimberlain, a forecaster at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

"The models are suggesting that the storm could actually become better organized or intensify a little bit, not due to the normal processes than we would expect for a tropical cyclone but more related this weather feature," Kimberlain said.

Most of Florida was under a tropical storm warning, and watches extended up the U.S. coast through North Carolina. Winds and rains generated by Sandy were being felt in south Florida.

I'm surprised that no-one has posted about this earlier.

But is now seems clear that someone, and all indications suggests Israel, has launched an air raid against a weapons factory/storage facility in Sudan.

[UPDATED: 8:00 p.m. ET]
"Superstorm." "The Perfect Storm." "Frankenstorm."
Whatever you want to call it, the East Coast is bracing for Hurricane Sandy, a "rare hybrid storm" that is expected to bring a life-threatening storm surge to the mid-Atlantic coast, Long Island Sound and New York harbor, forecasters say, with winds expected to be at or near hurricane force when it makes landfall sometime on Monday.

, the Category 1 hurricane was centered about 280 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 485 miles south of New York City early Sunday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and moving northeast at 15 mph.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the immediate, mandatory evacuation for low-lying coastal areas, including Coney Island, the Rockaways, Brighton Beach, Red Hook and some parts of lower Manhattan along the East River.

"If you don't evacuate, you're not just putting your own life at risk," Mayor Bloomberg said at a news conference Sunday. "You're endangering first responders who may have to rescue you."
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's message for residents was a bit more blunt. "Don't be stupid," Christie said Sunday afternoon, announcing the suspension of the state's transit system beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

Sandy is expected to continue on a parallel path along the mid-Atlantic coast later Sunday before making a sharp turn toward the northwest and southern New Jersey coastline on Monday--with the Jersey Shore and New York City in its projected path.

But the path is not necessarily the problem.
"Don't get fixated on a particular track," the Associated Press said. "Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow."

A tropical storm warning has been issued between Cape Fear to Duck, N.C., while hurricane watches and high-wind warnings are in effect from the Virginia to Massachusetts. The hurricane-force winds extend 175 miles from the epicenter of the storm, while tropical storm-force winds extend 500 miles--or roughly 1,000 miles end to end, making Sandy one of the biggest storms to ever hit the East Coast.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," Christie

. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Meanwhile, emergency evacuations were being mulled by state officials in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and even Maine.
In Virginia, Governor Bob McDonnell said 20,000 homes there had already reported power outages.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said FEMA director Craig Fugate said during a media briefing early Sunday. "This is a very large area."
Forecasters also fear the combination of storm surge, high tide and heavy rain--between 3 and 12 inches in some areas--could be life-threatening for coastal residents.
According to the National Hurricane Center

, coastal water levels could rise anywhere between 1 and 12 feet from North Carolina to Cape Cod, depending on the timing of the "peak surge." A surge of 6 to 11 feet is forecast for Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay, including New York Harbor.
The storm surge in New York Harbor during Hurricane Irene in September 2011, forecasters noted, was four feet.
