True, but still...I thought the Obama administration were not interested in getting involved or picking sides on any islands disputes in the Pacific? Especially one involving China and it's neighbors.

Of course the US doesn't want China to have those islands purely for strategic purposes. You have to remember the US can't take an official position on disputed territory because of everyone else's disputes and not only with China. South Korea claims islands that Japan is in control of. If the US takes a side declaring their position with Japan against China, that's going to effect South Korea's claim because a lot of these islands in dispute were given to Japan by the US after WWII. They have to look neutral because it opens a whole other can of worms if they don't.

I applaud the US for finally dropping the pretense of not taking side. There is only one policy (AKA China-Pivot) vis-a-vis China and it's neighbors.

The US truly doesn't want/need to take sides in this dispute, while I'm quite certain we will defend our allies, we would rather our allies work out their own differences with China in a fair and equitable manner, we have no desire to go to war with any-one, China, Russia, Iran, or even North Korea, while we love our freedom, and the implements of our freedom, we build this junk to keep us from being attacked/blackmailed, etc, and the thought of war is repulsive to most Americans, but not as repulsive as some bully attacking the helpless, at home or abroad, we aim to keep the playing field clear of bullies and barbarians, yes it may make us appear arrogant, but whatever, its still the right thing to do.

Obama is not a proactive president, He is reactionary. His Foreign policy of the past five years has been decidedly lack luster. now however he is realizing that his legacy at home is faltering and his Legacy abroad is turning into Chernobyl burning Allies and emboldening real and perceived threats. you can thank Putin for virtually Rubbing his nose in it. Now he's awake and his response is that of a reactionary to Double down and hurry to the finish in hopes he can blaze to victory. As such though he is doing it Through the System he knows. His statement of the Senkaku is based on a look at the Legalities, Any Us President would have to say it. As the Second China moved to the Island the Japanese would respond, and through there actions The Us would become involved. After all The major power base's of the SDF are the same bases as the Us Forces in Japan
That said before lauding Obama or the US and Japan with Claims of Imperialism. Words can only lead so far lets look at Obama's actions... Sushi. That's Right he held a Sushi party with Abe.
His military build up is spent his budgetary cuts are locked in. So he hopes to get China Envious. He will insult and try and Change the Dynamics.
The problem is his own actions of the past 5 years have weakened his position. Asia has entrenched it's self deeply.and China has South Korea towing it's line. The Philippines are overwhelmed at best. Vietnam is building back up but unlikely to Ally in any truly meaningful way. And Japan is virtually isolated. The ROC is Isolated. Australia has almost no interest
The remaining states are either too small, Too unstable, too poor to act or to disinterested to become involved. Those five years could have been used to change the situation but as it stands. There is nothing Obama really can do. Much like Russia in the Ukraine any real action is unrealistic at this time.

The PRC has not Won anything yet but they have through the preexisting distrust and Through the lack of a real foreign policy thy just happen to have a more or less open board.

What is happening is in Essence akin to What Happened to Jimmy Carter in the last year of his presidency When after the hostages were Taken He turned from a Dove to a hawk. the Question is just how far will he Go will this be a fizzle Pivot or a actual step to a comprehensive Foreign policy?

"The right thing to do" - I'll respect your opinion but I'll also point out this particular dispute the US has a very active hand in creating. Those islands were never the US's. Yet it unilaterally "gave administrative rights" to Japan because ROC and PROC were too helpless to really do anything about it at the time. Still is for ROC today which is why it's so quiet. It doesn't make the appearance of arrogance, it is. The average American is peace loving, the American govt is a whole different beast. Make no mistake, it's a fact Japan "annexed" those islands during the First Sino-Japanese War where Japan attacked under the pretense of its interests within Korea. There is absolutely nothing legitimate about such action. Defending Japan per a defense treaty over it's definite territory is one thing, over territory even the US grudgingly acknowledges is disputed has nothing to do with the right thing. It's purely a containment move and nothing peaceful. The US could have done the real right thing post WW2 and gave Okinawa back to the Okinawans. The Ryukyu Kingdom was its own independent entity but again, Japanese aggression destroyed it. Look at how they keep insisting the US base has to be on Okinawa, not Shikoku, not Kyushu, etc, despite the locals not wanting it. Because they are second class within Japan and freedom is a subjective word. The label "bully" is so overused and twisted.

Obama fails to reach a trade agreement with Japan. If you think about it, Japan wants no trade agreement among East Asian nations because that's the only way it can protect what Japanese special interests see as untouchable. Japan doesn't want to be isolated more than China as Obama believes. We'll see Obama open to negotiations with China before there's any agreement with Japan because that's when Japan will have second thoughts.
