Israeli Naval commandos on Wednesday intercepted an Iranian ship in the Red Sea weighed down with missiles that was en route to the Gaza Strip, the IDF said in a statement.

The boat, named KLOSC, was stopped by the elite naval commando unit Shayetet 13 as it was heading to Sudan, 1,500 miles from Israel.

Once on board the KLOSC Israeli soldiers found cement bags, behind which were hidden dozens of M-302 missiles which, the IDF said, were loaded onto the boat in Iran. Had the boat reached the Port of Sudan, its next stop would have been the Gaza Strip.

The M-302 missile is made in Syria and is based on Iranian technology, Israel’s Walla reported. M-302 missiles have a range of up to 200 kilometers and were used during the Second Lebanon War in 2006 to bomb several Israeli cities, including Haifa.

IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Benny Gantz, oversaw the operation and gave the order to Major General Ram Rothberg, head of the Israeli navy, to seize the KLOSC, the IDF said.

According to a senior Israeli military official, the commandos encountered no resistance from the crew of the KLOSC, Walla said.

The IDF said the success of the mission was “due to the combination of in-depth intelligence and enhanced operational capabilities.”

“This shipment, meant to reach the hands of terrorist organizations in Gaza that are waging an ongoing armed conflict against Israel. These terrorist organizations systematically use such weaponry against the Israeli civilian population,” the IDF added.

“Iran was behind the shipment,” said Brigadier General Moti Almoz, spokesman for the Israeli Navy, at a special press conference that was held on Wednesday, Ma’ariv reported.

IDF Spokesman, Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, said, “The IDF will continue to operate against the Iranian attempts to arm regional terrorist organizations, who intend to continuously ignite our borders. We will continue to employ all the necessary means in order to prevent the armament of terrorist organizations and will combat the Iranian smuggling attempts that threaten the security and sovereignty of the State of Israel.”

The Navy is currently in the process of towing the KLOSC to Israel’s southern port in Eilat and it is estimated that the voyage to Israel will take several days, Walla said.

China has announced a 12 per cent increase on its military spending. Any thoughts?

If you look at it strictly from a per capita standpoint it's not a big deal. Their defense spending is still less than 2% oF GDP and relative to population size and land mass totally acceptable especially with an ever growing economy and global trading. Their military spending is actually be low average when you look at those things holistically.
Of course all that being said part of me also worry and hope that the expansion of PLA forces is used for peaceful and defensive purposes only.

I also worry about an arms race because while I may look at the data objectively other neighboring countries may not. It's also interesting to see how the US look at this data and how they intepret it. As they say perception is everything.

It makes the thought of nuclear war and all the problems on earth seam inconsequential.

No, nuclear war is still very consequential. If that asteroid had hit, it would be the equivalent of but one large nuclear bomb hit hitting a random spot on earth. A nuclear war would involve many more than one big bomb, and each would be much more precisely targeted to do the utmost damage.

I believe anything less than 5 miles wide is not a civilization/life ending event unless it hit lands and a thousand miles or closer from you! but yeah any rock bigger than that I suggest pick a spot maybe up in the mountains, get a cigar in hand, maybe your fav wine and spend it with your love ones and watch the most spectacular fireworks of all time..for the last time.

A 10 mile wide rock will end most life on Earth even if it hits in the middle of the ocean. For those few that do survive the quality of life may as we know it is gone forever. We're talking no sun for many many years which means no plant life no animals etc and the few remaining humans left will most likely resort to cannibalism for survival.

You are such an optimist, and cheerful too, you can have the cigar, but I'm sure your talking about a mildly sweet red wine with a lot of "body".
