No offense, but that's hilarious coming from an American, since America and they west are the arch prophets of one of the most rigid and inflexible orthodoxies in human history - democracy.

Now freeze your face and take a picture of it and look at it. Is it any wonder that democracy has been stagnet right across the globe for the last century or so when that is the reaction directed at anyone who does not kow-tow before the alter of democracy and shout 'Hallelujah! I see the light and am saved!'?

The quote I hate the most about democrasy is that Churhill one about how democracy is the worst form of government, save all the others that have been tried.

I hate it because even thought on the face of it, it recognises the faults of democracy, the underlying message is that we should overlook all those faults because democrasy is as good as it gets.

I think that if western leaders spent half as much time looking at ways to improve on democracy instead of trying to hard sell it across the globe, they might have a better product to promote to the world and use domestically which don't need to be spread at the end of a precision guided bomb.

Let's hear Biden or any prominent American seriously challenge the orthodoxy of democrasy before we believe all this rhetoric about challenging the status quo being part of anyone's DNA.

actually this is not the first time an American vice president made a speech like this while visiting a foreign nation. in 1998 then vice president Al Gore did something similar while at the apec summit in Malaysia. to much of the rest of the world these ridiculous antics are just amusement from clowns. we are too used to political baffoons from the united states. remember that famous Michael bay style landing on an aircraft carrier by George dubya bush with a huge banner hanging that read "mission accomplished'' all shot in a wide angle with a huge American flag fluttering in the wind in SLOW MOTION? all done for a good photo op and soundbite. Joseph Biden doesn't know how stupid and moronic he looks in front of millions of Chinese folks when he says that in China.

I think Kim won't loose him for the worm. Think he's being held for a political play. Lets see normally its a former member of the cabinet or president. I don't see either of the Bushes doing its. And Bill was last time. My money says Kim wants a visit from The other Rod. Hillary Rodham Clinton, former secretary of state and senator. And particularly a Democrat favorite for next president. That later part would be a major propaganda coup for Kimmy boy.

Hundreds of foreign workers torch cars and attack police in one of worst riots in Singapore for 40 years after Indian man killed by bus

Hundreds of foreign workers set fire to cars and clashed with police during a riot in Singapore tonight.

The disorder, which is rare in the city state, broke out in Singapore's Little India district after an Indian worker was reportedly hit and killed by a bus.

It is believed to be the worst outbreak of violence in Singapore for 40 years.

Ten police officers were injured as about 400 people rioted, flipping police cars and smashing ambulances with sticks and garbage bins.

Witness Dharmendra Yadav, told Channel News Asia that at least two vehicles were on fire, and that rubbish and broken bottles were strewn on the streets.

He said he and many others were in a nearby Hindu temple attending a wedding when police called asking that the gates be locked until officers gave them clearance to leave.

He said: 'We heard explosions. We also heard warnings from riot police.'

Footage on Channel News Asia showed at least two vehicles on fire and debris strewn across Racecourse Road, one of the main thoroughfares in Little India. Many other private cars were reported to have been damaged as well.

Singapore Police Force said the riot started after a fatal traffic accident.

'Shortly after, a riot broke out involving a crowd of about 400 subjects where the subjects damaged five police vehicles and one ambulance,' it said in a statement.

Incidents like this are rare in Singapore, which has tough laws on rioting that carry a sentence of up to seven years in prison and possible caning.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that 'whatever events may have sparked the rioting, there is no excuse for such violent, destructive, and criminal behaviour, according to ABC.

'This is a serious incident which has resulted in injuries and damage to public property,' said Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs. 'Police will spare no efforts to apprehend the subjects involved in the riot.'

The area is popular among Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Nepali expatriates and is usually busy on Sundays as South Asian workers enjoy their day off.

The violence is likely to fuel concerns about discontent among low-paid foreign workers.

Last year Singapore saw its biggest outbreak of labour unrest in years when around 170 bus drivers from mainland China went on strike illegally.

Police brought the riot under control at about 1am on Monday morning, local time.

How does a deadly accident involving a bus turns into a protest about foreign workers being paid low?

Interesting since Singapore made a big deal about Mainland Chinese workers protesting being paid lower than other foreign workers, are they going to blame this on Mainland China since it was Mainland Chinese bus drivers protesting to divert attention from the obvious that Singapore treats people badly according to ethnicity and economic status?

Time for the Arab Spring in Singapore. Remember the Mongolian that was killed in a vehicle accident in Inner Mongolia that was used to try to spark an Arab Spring in China?

I wonder what this government will do going forward. They were ill-prepared for this sort of eventuality and probably failed to foresee it to happen there. Why, there are so many foreigners there living life like their homeland. Dissatisfaction against the government's favorable treatment of foreign workers has been growing for years and this incident may lead to more votes for the opposition at the next general election. I would expect that particular area to be have been saturated with cctvs and riot departments located in the vicinity.

Anyone would rather welcome strike-bent than uncivilized barbaric foreign workers. If this sort of conduct is not severely dealt with, those scums will think the government is a lame duck. Already, that category of people has a higher offenses of deviant sexual behavior even here and elsewhere.

WTH!? I thought Singapore has the most stable society in the world!

I thought so also. My ex-wife won a trip to Singapore for two in 2003. It seemed peaceful to me..rather pleasant in fact. I had previously been there via the USN in '75,'81 & '91.

Just what is the real underlying cause of this violence?
