The Telegraph said:Improvised rocket launchers were fired close to a US airbase near Tokyo, police and the American military said on Friday, with suspicions falling on one of Japan’s small ultra-leftist groups.
No one was hurt and no damage was done in the incident, which media reported came just hours after the arrest of a senior member of a radical faction, and followed a pattern seen four years earlier.
“The incident occurred at 11:30pm on Thursday. Flying objects were launched near the US military’s Yokota Airbase,” a spokesman for Tokyo Metropolitan Police said.
“Several reports were made by neighbours that they had heard explosions at about 11:30pm. Police discovered two steel pipes, two wires, batteries, and so forth.
“No damage has been reported so far and police have not found the projectiles.”
Local media reported the pipes were buried in the ground, with the upper end pointing in the direction of Yokota Airbase.
A statement from the US military confirmed the presence of “an improvised mortar launch outside Yokota”.
“There were no injuries and thus far we have found no damage or impact points here on base. We take matters of security at our installation very seriously and we are assisting” police, it said.
There have been no claims of responsibility, but police believe it may have been a guerrilla attack by extreme leftists, Jiji Press and other media said.
Broadcaster NTV reported police were concentrating their investigations on the Revolutionary Labourers’ Association Anti-Majority Faction because the incident came just hours after they arrested a top-ranking member on Thursday.
A similar incident occurred four years ago, when police raided hideouts of the same leftists, NTV said.
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Scotland's official holiday was transformed into a grim day of mourning Saturday as emergency crews searched the wreckage of a riverside pub smashed by a falling police helicopter. At least eight people died and more than a dozen remained hospitalized with serious injuries.

The Clutha, a popular Glasgow pub, was filled with revelers enjoying a local ska band on Friday night, the eve of St. Andrew's Day, named for the patron saint of Scotland and which is normally a celebration of Scottish culture and heritage.
Instead, Scotland's leader ordered flags at government buildings to be lowered to half-staff after the tragedy.
"This is a black day for Glasgow and Scotland, but it's also St. Andrew's Day, and it's a day we can take pride and courage in how we respond to adversity and tragedy," Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said.
There may be more bad news. Police said a rescue and recovery operation is ongoing and that it wasn't clear what will be found once the aircraft's wreckage is removed. The process may take days.
That means more waiting for people who don't know if their loved ones were in The Clutha at the fateful moment when the helicopter fell from the sky, directly hitting the riverside drinking establishment.
Witnesses said it seemed to fall straight down into the roof of the pub. The crash Friday at around 10:30 p.m. sent dozens of patrons fleeing through a cloud of dust. Witnesses spoke of people streaming out of the building covered in blood, with gashes and other injuries.
Ambulances rushed to the scene, taking the injured to nearby hospitals.
Local resident Paul Dundas, 26, said he heard a loud bang and looked out of his window to see a plume of dust rising above the pub.
"At first I thought it was a firework," he said.
"People were covered in blood and dust. Other people were dragging them away from the bar and trying to get them out. Everyone was in shock, but people were helping and asking strangers if they were OK. I saw a couple help each other clean up their faces."
Chief Constable Stephen House said three of the dead were found in the helicopter, which was carrying two police officers and a civilian pilot.
They "were our colleagues," House said, bowing his head and taking a long pause and swallow.

He said the five other fatalities were found inside the building and that 14 people remained hospitalized with serious injuries.
House wouldn't say if more people are believed to be inside the severely damaged pub. He said the helicopter is still "dominating the whole space" in the one-story building and that police won't know the situation until the wreckage is cleared away.
It wasn't immediately clear what the helicopter was doing in the area prior to the crash. Police and air safety investigators say it's too early to speculate on why the Eurocopter EC135 T2 helicopter came down on the pub's roof, close to a helipad on the bank of the River Clyde.
Police said the scene was extremely dangerous because the building was unstable.
"We are dealing with a very sensitive investigation and operation here," House said. "It will go on for many days yet."
The Clutha pub was packed at the time. Police said there were well over 100 people inside the bar at the time of the crash, listening to the tunes of local ska band Esperanza.
With the scene cordoned off, groups of people huddled around police tape Saturday, some visibly upset and crying. A blue tarpaulin had been spread on the roof of the pub, but for much of the day the shapes of the blades and mangled fuselage were clearly visible from the street.
John McGarrigle, 38, said that he believed his 59-year-old father, also named John, had died in the crash.
The younger McGarrigle, who described his father as a regular at the bar who sat in the same seat every night, had arrived on the scene shortly after the crash and stayed all night.
"His friend told me she went to the toilet, heard the noise and went back into the bar," he said. "He was gone. There was nothing left where he'd been sitting."
Search and rescue dogs were on the scene throughout Saturday, with more than 100 firefighters participating alongside expert crews trained in shoring up unstable buildings.
Witness David Campbell, 22, said he was approaching the pub with friends when he heard a loud bang.

"We ran up to bar and saw lots of people coming out — dozens," he said. "Some were injured I saw one man with a very bad head injury. There was blood, blood, blood. I'm not sure if he has made it.
He said some residents ran into the pub to try to aid victims.
"I saw some people smash a window beside the blocked door and help people get out," he said. "It was a stressful situation, but there was a sense of purpose about it."
Resident Karen Smith watched events unfold from her balcony and said a nearby bridge over the river was lined with ambulances after the crash.
"We could see paramedics being helped by ordinary people. They were lifting and helping the wounded to ambulances," she said. "I could hear raised voices, and I suppose it was chaotic, but you could see people mucking in together."
She said she couldn't believe her eyes when she realized it was a helicopter that caused the disaster.
"The yellow tips of the blades were clearly sticking out of the building and I could see the word 'police' written on the side," she said.
Members of the ska band Esperanza joined others in praising the rescue effort.
"Waking up and realizing that it is all definitely horribly real," the band wrote on its Facebook page. "Despite the situation everyone was so helpful and caring of each other. The police, ambulances, firefighters all did a stellar job and continue to do so today."
The twin-engine Eurocopter is widely used by police and ambulance services.
In 2007, a Eurocopter EC135 T2 crashed in southern England. The pilot and his wife were unhurt, but the aircraft was badly damaged. Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch said there had been a failure of the autotrim system which maintains the aircraft's position. The agency recommended changes to correct the problem.

GCaptain said:The 488 meter long hull of Shell’s Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) plant has been floated out of the dry dock at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) yard in Geoje, South Korea, where it has been under construction for just over a year.
At 600,000 tons fully loaded, the vessel will be the largest floating structure ever constructed. To put that in perspective, the Prelude FLNG will displace nearly six times as much as water the largest aircraft carrier. At 488 meters long (1601 feet), the hull is almost 300 feet longer than Maersk’s new Triple-E containerships. The facility itself will be constructed with 260,000 tons of solid steel, or more than three times more steel than in the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s LNG tanks can store up to 220,000 m3 of LNG, 90,000 m3 of LPG, and 126,000 m3 of condensate, or a total capacity equivalent to approximately 175 Olympic swimming pools.
Shell plans to moor the Prelude FLNG some 200 kilometers off western Australia at the Prelude gas field for 25 years, where it is expected to produce the equivalent of 110,000 BOE per day.
In addition to its impressive size, the Prelude FLNG facility will be able to withstand Category 5 cyclones, secured in place by one of the largest mooring systems in the world. A 93-meter (305-foot) high turret will run through the facility while four groups of mooring lines will anchor it to the seabed. Three 6,700-horsepower stern thrusters, two of which will operate at any one time, will be used to pivot the facility either out of the wind or to allow LNG carriers to pull safely alongside to load.
Shell says that more than 600 people spent over 1.6 million hours working on different design options for the facility. Eight one-meter diameter pipes will extend about 150 meters below the facility and be used to pump cool seawater (50,000 m3 per hour) to chill the gas to -162° Celsius (-260°F), shrinking it by 600 times in volume and allowing it to be shipped directly from the facility itself.
“This is revolutionary technology developed by Shell,” says Neil Gilmour, Shell Vice President Integrated Gas Development. “It has the potential to change the way we produce natural gas.”
The Prelude FLNG, which analysts says may cost over $12 billion to build, is due to be producing by 2017.
Humans Evolved From Chimp and Pig Mating, Claims a Scientist
Posted by Stephen Adkins on Dec 02, 2013 09:31 AM EST
A new study by Eugene McCarthy from the University of Georgia claims that humans did not evolve from chimps alone, but in fact from a combination of chimps and pigs. McCarthy said that at some point in human evolutionary history, a pig mated with a chimpanzee that might have led to Homo sapiens.
Zhou Yongkang under house arrest: Mingjing News

Retired political heavyweight Zhou Yongkang, who is rumored to be under investigation for graft, has effectively been placed under house arrest, while his son Zhou Bin has been detained by Chinese security officials in Singapore, reports Mingjing News, a website allegedly sourced by political insiders and run by overseas Chinese.
Prior to his retirement last November, the 70-year-old Zhou was a member of the Politburo Standing Bureau, China's top decision-making body, and chief of the Central Political and Legislative Committee, the department in charge of the country's security forces and law enforcement institutions. Earlier in his career Zhou was also the general manager of state-owned oil giant China National Petroleum Corp and the minister of Land and Resources. A WikiLeaks cable from 2009 revealed that the US government believes he heads a group of individuals who control the interests of China's lucrative oil industry.
According to the latest issue of Mingjing's Zhongguo Mibao magazine, Zhou Yongkang's son Zhou Bin, who had reportedly fled to California to evade China's anti-graft authorities, never made it to the United States and was actually apprehended by Chinese officials in Singapore. Mingjing claims, however, that Zhou Bin, who holds American and Singaporean passports, has not been officially placed under arrest though is also prohibited from leaving Singapore.
The magazine report also said that the investigation into Zhou Yongkang's corrupt activities has advanced and that the retired politician has effectively been placed under house arrest. Zhou's corruption case will implicate a number of other high-ranking government and Communist Party officials, the report added.
Wang Qishan, head of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, China's anti-graft watchdog, has allegedly issued an order calling for 24-hour surveillance of all individuals implicated in the Zhou Yongkang case and for the confiscation of their passports. Persons of interest already detained will all be relocated to Beijing, where they cannot be moved unless with the prior joint written authorisation of the investigation team leader and Beijing public security bureau chief Fu Zhenghua.
Rumors regarding Zhou Yongkang's downfall have circulated on the internet since last year, though so far none have proven to be authentic.
For example, one widespread, but erroneous, belief is that all hybrids are sterile. This idea keeps a lot of people from even considering the possibility that humans might be of hybrid origin. This assertion is absolutely false — though I have in fact heard lots of people make it. For instance, in reviewing the reports I collected for my book on hybridization in birds (Handbook of Avian Hybrids of the World, Oxford University Press, 2006), which documents some 4,000 different kinds of hybrid crosses among birds, I found that those crosses producing partially fertile hybrids are about eight times as common as crosses known to produce sterile ones. The usual result is a reduction in fertility, not absolute sterility. My current work documenting hybridization among mammals shows that partially fertile natural hybrids are common, too, in Class Mammalia. And yet, it seems most people base their ideas of hybrids on the common mule (horse x ass), which is an exceptionally sterile hybrid, and not at all representative of hybrids as a whole.
You sure that's not a Onion headline.
that's like saying hyenas are the result of cats and dogs mating. even if it happened to two are not biologically compatible.
