ROME (AP) — A ship carrying African migrants toward Italy caught fire and capsized off the Sicilian island of Lampedusa Thursday, spilling hundreds of passengers into the sea, officials said. Seventy-eight bodies were recovered and some 260 people were unaccounted-for.

It was one of the deadliest accidents in recent times during the notoriously perilous crossing from Africa for migrants seeking a new life in the European Union.

In an indication of the scale of the unfolding tragedy, Interior Minister Angelino Alfano canceled his appointments Thursday and headed to Lampedusa to oversee the rescue operations first-hand. Pope Francis, who visited Lampedusa in July, quickly sent his condolences.

"It's an immense tragedy," said Lampedusa Mayor Giusi Nicolini, adding that the dead included at least one child of about 3 and a pregnant woman.

The migrants were from Eritrea, Ghana and Somalia, the coast guard said.

Antonio Candela, the government's health commissioner for Palermo, said 78 bodies had been found and that search and rescue operations were continuing, LaPresse news agency reported.

He said 159 people have been rescued, but the boat is believed to have been carrying as many as 500 people, meaning some 260 are still unaccounted for.

Coast guard ships and helicopters from across the region, as well as local fishing boats were on the scene trying to find survivors, said coast guard spokesman Marco Di Milla.

Mayor Nicolini said the ship had caught fire after those on board set off flares so it would be seen by passing ships. The ship apparently then capsized, spilling the passengers into the sea near Conigli island.

It was one of the deadliest migrant shipwrecks in recent times and the second one this week off Italy: On Monday, 13 men drowned while trying to reach southern Sicily when their ship ran aground just a few meters (yards) from shore.

Lampedusa is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and is the frequent destination for smugglers' boats. Hundreds of migrants reach the shores every day, particularly during summer months when seas are usually calmer. They are processed in centers, screened for asylum and often sent back home.

Those who aren't usually melt into the general public and make their way to northern Europe, where immigrant communities are much bigger and better organized. In Italy, migrants can only work legally if they have a work permit and contract before they arrive.

According to the U.N. refugee agency, 8,400 migrants landed in Italy and Malta in the first six months of the year, almost double the 4,500 who arrived during the first half of 2012. It's still a far cry from the tens of thousands who flooded to Italy during the Arab Spring exodus of 2011.

The numbers, though, have spiked in recent weeks, particularly with Syrian arrivals.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees had recorded 40 deaths in the first half of 2013, and a total of 500 for all of 2012, based on interviews with survivors. Fortress Europe, an Italian observatory that tracks migrant deaths reported by the media, says about 6,450 people died in the Canal of Sicily between 1994 and 2012.

I have enjoied most of Clancy books, no other similar authors had the same ability to create realistic geopolitical environments, clash, and thrilling stories like Clancy did. Sad news, rest in peace.

It was a 34 year old woman with a one year old infant in a car seat.

She came up to a roadblock near the White House (a block or more away), and apparently in turning around was told to stop. She did not. She sped away, knocking own a stanchion in the process, and an officer who tried to stop her was injured.

A chase ensued. She was penned in at one point, but backed into a police car, turned and got away. At that point, several shots were fired at her by officers. In the continuing chase, a law enforcement vehicle wrecked.

Finally, her car came to a stop, on a divider as I understand it, and she was shot dead, being hit multiple times.

She never fired a shot, she was in fact unarmed.

The barricades around the White House have been moved much further out under Obama. I believe this woman, who had a good education, a good job, and was not from DC, but from Connecticut, more than likely made a wrong turn, and then panicked when faced with armed officers. If she was unarmed and had a one year-old in a car seat, I believe the officers grossly over-reacted. But I will wait for all of the facts to come out.

While the behaviour of the woman driver was extremely odd and stupid, that in itself is not a death crime.

The police were right to approach her car and try to detain her after she backed into that secret service agent, and they were right to give chase after she raced away, but they should not have opened fire when she was driving away, and if initial reports that the woman was only shot and killed after her car crashed and was immobilized are true, than it was an outrageous overreaction and use of excessive force by the police. Because at that point, she was effectively neutralised as a threat and wasn't going anywhere, so there was no justification for that kind of execution style killing.

Obama has basicly barricaded DC in order to try and make a point. Its still early and still a lot of unanswered questions. DC is not exactly a peaceful place though its known for violent crime as much as it is politics. When I last visited the city I was warned very carefully to stay away from some neighborhoods. Sure we all see the white of the national mall but that weekend I counted six times the news broadcasts reported shootings including one at the national zoo.

This reminded me of another incident in NYC Port authority 3 weeks ago. Law enforcement are are too trigger happy without regards to public safety.

In the latest example of wanton disregard for public safety by the New York Police Department (NYPD), two bystanders were shot near Times Square in Manhattan as officers fired their weapons at a 35-year-old man who was wandering in traffic. Reports indicate that the man appeared to be mentally impaired and may have intentionally been attempting to be struck by a vehicle. Some witnesses indicate that he had actually been hit several times.

The incident took place at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Saturday in the vicinity of the Port Authority Bus Terminal, an area typically crowded with travelers and tourists. Police allege that the man, who had not threatened anyone but was merely disrupting vehicular traffic, appeared to reach for a weapon when police approached and then mimicked shooting at them with his hand. Two officers then opened fire despite the fact that a crowd had gathered.

The shots missed the man, later identified as Glenn Broadnax, but struck two women. One was hit below the knee, fracturing her tibia and fibula, and the other in the buttocks. Both were taken to the hospital.

Regarding both the DC and NYC incidents these were both cases of mentally disturbed people, who cannot be readily identified as such, behaving in suspicious ways, endangering others, close to likely terrorism targets. In the DC case she was even in a car and had used it in the manner of a deadly weapon against the authorities and was close to especially high-value likely terrorism targets. The use of force in these situations are at least understandable though clearly not ideal, and I don't know if they were according to protocol. It is a new low though that I was hoping not to see on this forum for people to pervert these incidents to take cheap politically motivated shots at the Obama administration.
