I think the pro-NATO ones are probably undergoing this phase right now. But the pro-Russia ones are probably adhering to the old standards, maybe just upgrading their guns to new Russian standards.

Thanks Vini.

No problem.

It's funny if you look at it, it's almost like the Bluray Vs HD DVD stand-off, or the VHS Vs Beta stand-off. They are fundamentally the same thing, just having slight variations. Modern infantry weapons are no longer that important. Even it still was, style of bullets won't make that big of a difference anymore. These days most casualties are caused by big howitzers and aerial dropped bombs. If you look at the cause of death for Iraqi insurgents, rarely any of them are actually killed by a rifle round.

True, but for close range fighting and urban warfare the rifles are still needed. I mean somebody has to make some noise to cause a ruckus. Then you locate your enemy's position and call in for fires.

Yeah, it is one of those weapons that are still needed but barely used, or used but insignificant. It's like knives and pistols, every soldier has it, but rarely does any enemy get killed by it.

the choice of caliber and there for weapon is based on three issues, One Finances if you lack the cash then a new boom stick is off the menu.
two choices, Nato caliber weapons have so many goodies on the aftermarket that it's become a virtual jack of all trades.
three availability.
in the cold war you would have been correct VVV but in modern times Russia manufactures and builds both weapons and bullets in nato calibers.

i'm surprised with how well equipped the Latvians are

Danes, Swedes or Norwegians sure, but Latvia? aren't they some tiny country next to Russia

it pains me to see how well geared they are compared to China's :(

Those are full time Latvian infantry units, so they required a lot more sophisticated equipment, communication gear, and weapons. I'm sure China infantry unit is the same as well and it also depends on the types of mission that the infantry is conducting.

Doubt it. Never seen PLA active troops in nice gears. They only have guns and helmets. You wouldn't even see them in radios, ballistic vests and camel-paks, which are now basic necessities in modern infantries.
