11.02.2011. Early on Friday morning, the Danish warship HDMS Esbern Snare, part of NATO's counter piracy mission, OPERATION OCEAN SHIELD, freed a hijacked fishing vessel in the Somali basin. HDMS Esbern Snare came across a suspicious vessel with two skiffs on deck. She launched her helicopter in order to investigate and to stop the vessel. After firing warning shots the vessel did stop and the crew surrendered. HDMS Esbern Snare then sent a boarding party to investigate. After boarding the vessel it became clear that those on the vessel were 16 suspected pirates and 2 Yemeni hostages. The original fishing crew of 9 people had been held for a year but most of them had been released. During the search weapons, including AK-47's and rocket propelled grenade launchers and ammunition were found. The Yemeni hostages are currently on board HDMS Esbern Snare. The weapons and ammunition will be taken from the pirates and the pirates will be dealt with in accordance with instructions from national authorities. (

Since spare parts for the type 42 destroyers were not obtainable (ecpecially sea dart missles) Because of the Falklands War (Guerra de las Malvinas). The ship had a major conversion in 2000 in which the flight deck and hangar were enlarged to allow her to operate three Sea King helicopters carrying a complement of 238 marine infantry. The Sea Dart system has been replaced with AM-39 Exocet an d each helicopter also carries two AM-39 Exocet

It's nice to see the photograph of 25 de Mayo. She is the only aircraft carrier I have visited, for a few hours, when she still was the Dutch national ship Karel Doorman, in the port of Rotterdam. She was sold to Argentina in 1968.
Did Argentina have another aircraft carrier in the 50's?

Yes, Argentina operate another carrier called the Indpendencia, which too was a Colossus class carrier (ex HMS Warrior). It served from 1959 to 1970 and was scraped in 1971. If you should have any pictures or any stories I would greatly enjoy hearing them!

The Pucara was designed to operate from roughfield and unprepared sites with the minimum of ground support. Operations are possible by night, but not in adverse weather conditions, and weapons aiming is achieved visually by the pilot making full use of the excellent forward visibility over the Pucara's downward sloping nose.
The production standard IA 58A first flew on 8 November 1974, with deliveries to the Argentine Air Force commencing just over a year later.
Improvements led to the IA 58B model, the main upgrades being improved avionics and the addition of two 30mm cannon in place of the 20mm weapons.
An IA-58C model (basically a ‘B’ model) with the forward cockpit removed and two 20mm cannons in place. For a total of two 30mm, two 20mm and four 7.62mm forward firing guns.

Although influenced by the Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet design, the Pampa differs in being a smaller aircraft, it is also single-engined and has straight wings rather than the swept ones of the Alpha Jet. It is constructed mainly of aalloy, with carbon-fibre used for components such as the air intakes. The crew of two sit in Tandem under a single piece clamshell canopy. The new attack version (AT-63) uses a Honeywell TFE-731-2C turbofan engine with 3,500 pounds of thrust. The new engine features a new digital DEC computer and improved mean time between failures. This family of engines has more than 8,000 in service with more than three million flight hours.
The aircraft also has a digital cockpit with a heads-up display in the forward cockpit. The state-of-the-art avionics suite includes a 1553B data bus, full systems redundancy, glass crew stations, laser ring INS/GPS NAV, a new mission computer and an integrated weapons system. This system is being designed and furnished by Elbit Systems, Ltd., Israel.
The light attack features of the aircraft include five weapons stations, enabling air-to-air and air-to-ground capability with a maximum payload of 1900 kilograms.
