Re: Argentine Armed Forces

Nice picts!!! Any plans for procurement of advanced fighters? It is about time for Argentina to beef up the air force once more.

Re: Argentine Armed Forces

Overall... the Argentine military is now a sad shadow of what it was 30 years ago, and in relative terms almost a shadow of what was in every historic frame since the consolidation of the republic.

The aftermath of the Falklands/Malvinas conflict, and specially the consecuences of the dirty war on terrorism, during the seventies have affected seriously the public concern about the defense, and the military as a whole.

The budget shortage entered an iterative process, with the sucesive lost of operative capabilities. Only a few aircraft of each type are still operative, no credible air defense, no credible antitank weapons... In short: old inventory, low staffing, low salaries, but strangly a good moral.

There has been some talk of the Air Force purchasing (1500 hours on the airframes) 13 Mirage F-1’s from Jordan for $100 mil USD. However there has been no confirmation form either government. The dozen or so Mirages that are still fly are meticulosly maintained, however they are on there last legs (35 to40 years old) and are in desperate need or replacement. The 30 A-4AR are “newer”, but still getting long in the tooth, and there are not intended for any type of air superiority.

I fear that Argentina may end up like New Zealand, without a fast jet force.

This is what Chinese military fans are confused about. Argentina is doing very well economically but still maintains a relatively small air force. Is Argentina still under sanctions or are there some other reasons? Why not an air superiority fighter when Brazil is getting new ones?

Re: Argentine Armed Forces

Economically Argentina is doing better than it was in 2000 and 2001. However, it is still a far cry from where it was in the 1990’s. The money for new equipment is there, but the problem is the government. Many of the ministers of the current administration were enemies of the State during the dirty war of the 1970’s and are therefore resentful of the military. This is their way of getting back at them (them being the armed forces as a whole). Additionally there is an election in Argentina this year, which means that the money that would go to purchase equipment and increase salaries will go to buying votes and keep the current administration in power.

As a footnote: the Argentine government spent over 600 million US$ to broadcast futbol games for poor Argentines, but can’t spend 200 million on some used fighter aircraft.
