The Philosopher Kings are very worried about the unwashed masses breaking their 'iron rice bowls,' and desperate to put down the popular revolt. Apparently, Western elites only care about "democracy" and "will of the people" if the peasants are willing to obey their betters and be farmed as cattle. You got to give the devil its due though, because while evidence show most elites are contemptuous of the unwashed masses, few are willing to say it out loud. So, a one handed clap for James Traub.

I don't like Trump, because I think he's a race-baiting misogynist, but there might be benefits to the chaos he would wrought, in the form of the people taking back the country from unworthy elites. Maybe.

was born in 1954, and until now I would have said that the late 1960s was the greatest period of political convulsion I have lived through. Yet for all that the Vietnam War and the civil rights struggle changed American culture and reshaped political parties, in retrospect those wild storms look like the normal oscillations of a relatively stable political system. The present moment is different. Today’s citizen revolt — in the United States, Britain, and Europe — may upend politics as nothing else has in my lifetime.

In the late 1960s, elites were in disarray, as they are now — but back then they were fleeing from kids rebelling against their parents’ world; now the elites are fleeing from the parents. In the late 1960s, elites were in disarray, as they are now — but back then they were fleeing from kids rebelling against their parents’ world; now the elites are fleeing from the parents. Extremism has gone mainstream. One of the most brazen features of the Brexit vote was the utter repudiation of the bankers and economists and Western heads of state who warned voters against the dangers of a split with the European Union. British Prime Minister David Cameron thought that voters would defer to the near-universal opinion of experts; that only shows how utterly he misjudged his own people.
Both the Conservative and the Labour parties in Britain are

. The British have had their day of reckoning; the American one looms. If Donald Trump loses, and loses badly (forgive me my reckless optimism, but I believe he will) the Republican Party may endure a historic split between its know-nothing base and its K Street/Chamber of Commerce leadership class. The Socialist government of France may face a similar fiasco in national elections next spring:

that President François Hollande would not even make it to the final round of voting. Right-wing parties all over Europe are clamoring for an exit vote of their own.

Yes, it’s possible that all the political pieces will fly up into the air and settle down more or less where they were before, but the Brexit vote shows that shocking change isn’t very shocking anymore. Where, then, could those pieces end up? Europe is already pointing in one direction. In much of Europe, far-right nativist parties lead in the polls. So far, none has mustered a majority, though last month Norbert Hofer, a member of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party,

, came within a hair of winning election as president. Mainstream parties of the left and right may increasingly combine forces to keep out the nationalists. This has already happened in Sweden, where a right-of-center party serves as the minority partner to the left-of-center government. If the Socialists in France do in fact lose the first round, they will almost certainly support the conservative Republicans against the far-right National Front.

Perhaps these informal coalitions can survive until the fever breaks. But the imperative of cohabitation could also lead to genuine realignment. That is, chunks of parties from the left and right of center could break away to form a different kind of center, defending pragmatism, meliorism, technical knowledge, and effective governance against the ideological forces gathering on both sides. It’s not hard to imagine the Republican Party in the United States — and perhaps the British Conservatives should Brexit go terribly wrong — losing control of the angry, nationalist rank and file and reconstituting themselves as the kind of Main Street, pro-business parties they were a generation ago, before their ideological zeal led them into a blind alley. That may be their only alternative to irrelevance.

The issue, at bottom, is globalization. Brexit, Trump, the National Front, and so on show that political elites have misjudged the depth of the anger at global forces and thus the demand that someone, somehow, restore the status quo ante. It may seem strange that the reaction has come today rather than immediately after the economic crisis of 2008, but the ebbing of the crisis has led to a new sense of stagnation. With prospects of flat growth in Europe and minimal income growth in the United States, voters are rebelling against their dismal long-term prospects. And globalization means culture as well as economics: Older people whose familiar world is vanishing beneath a welter of foreign tongues and multicultural celebrations are waving their fists at cosmopolitan elites. I was recently in Poland, where a far-right party appealing to nationalism and tradition has gained power despite years of undeniable prosperity under a centrist regime. Supporters use the same words again and again to explain their vote: “values and tradition.” They voted for Polishness against the modernity of Western Europe.

Perhaps politics will realign itself around the axis of globalization, with the fist-shakers on one side and the pragmatists on the other. The nationalists would win the loyalty of working-class and middle-class whites who see themselves as the defenders of sovereignty. The reformed center would include the beneficiaries of globalization and the poor and non-white and marginal citizens who recognize that the celebration of national identity excludes them.

Of course, mainstream parties of both the left and the right are trying to reach the angry nationalists. Sometimes this takes the form of gross truckling, as when Nicolas Sarkozy, who is seeking to regain France’s presidency,

the “tyranny of minorities” and invokes the “forever France” of an all-white past. From the left, Hillary Clinton has jettisoned her free-trade past to appeal to union members and others who want to protect national borders against the global market. But left and right disagree so deeply about how best to cushion the effects of globalization, and how to deal with the vast influx of refugees and migrants, that even the threat of extremism may not be enough to bring them to make common cause.

The schism we see opening before us is not just about policies, but about reality. The schism we see opening before us is not just about policies, but about reality. The Brexit forces won because cynical leaders were prepared to cater to voters’ paranoia, lying to them about the dangers of immigration and the costs of membership in the EU. Some of those leaders have

that they were lying. Donald Trump has, of course, set a new standard for disingenuousness and catering to voters’ fears, whether over immigration or foreign trade or anything else he can think of. The Republican Party, already rife with science-deniers and economic reality-deniers, has thrown itself into the embrace of a man who fabricates realities that ignorant people like to inhabit.
Did I say “ignorant”? Yes, I did. It is necessary to say that people are deluded and that the task of leadership is to un-delude them. Is that “elitist”? Maybe it is; maybe we have become so inclined to celebrate the authenticity of all personal conviction that it is now elitist to believe in reason, expertise, and the lessons of history. If so, the party of accepting reality must be prepared to take on the party of denying reality, and its enablers among those who know better. If that is the coming realignment, we should embrace it.

Trump is the natural consequence of the manufactured, hyper-partisan, "political drama" that the media has been peddling to the public ever since the rise of the Tea Party.

Abraham Lincoln once said, you can fool everyone some of the time, or some people all of the time, but you can't fool everyone all the time. It was just a matter of time that people began to realize that it didn't matter whether they voted Republican or Democrat, the end result is remarkably similar. Bush Jr. started the invasion of Afghanistan and the 2nd Gulf War. Obama, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize on the first day of his job, started civil wars in Libya, Ukrained, and Syria, and still hasn't gotten out of Iraq and Afghanistan, despite the countless times he has proclaimed so.

Trump is a reflection of the American media. Trump took the media stories as truth, and ran with them to their logical conclusion. In doing so, he has exposed the contradictory nature of the stories that the mainstream media is trying to foist on the public.

News today is like those 90's sitcoms and shows. Each episode is an enclosed story, and episodes have little or even any continuity between them. This month, it's all about how horrible ISIS is. Next month, it's all about how bad Russia is for bombing Syria. Last month it was refugee children drowning in the mediterranean. The link between them? Oh don't mind that. Here, read some celebrity gossip!

It worked well while it did, but eventually people wizened up.

Well, that didn't take long. I always suspected Trump and his minions would do something like it, but the speed of it all is both impressive, in a bad way, and worrying. I used to rail against 'King Barack' and his trashing of the Constitution, but now I wonder if Americans turn out one would be king, only to find a worse one? I sure hope not, but I don't like what I'm seeing. I mean these people don't even bother changing the name of "House Un-American Activities Committee!"

(CNN)Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is calling for the creation of a new House Committee on Un-American Activities, invoking the infamous "Red Scare"-era congressional body as a blueprint for weeding out American ISIS adherents and sympathizers.

"We originally created the House Un-American Activities Committee to go after Nazis,"

during an appearance on "Fox and Friends" this week. "We passed several laws in 1938 and 1939 to go after Nazis and we made it illegal to help the Nazis. We're going to presently have to go take the similar steps here."
Gingrich, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, has been touted as a potential running mate for the presumptive Republican nominee.
His comments on Monday echoed Trump's, as the billionaire businessman suggested "Muslim communities" should be held to greater account for the actions of their neighbors.
"They know what is going on," Trump said during a speech Monday in New Hampshire. "They know that (the Orlando killer) was bad. They knew the people in San Bernardino were bad. But you know what, they didn't turn them in, and we had death and destruction."
The House Un-American Activities Committee was founded on the eve of World War II but gained greater notoriety a decade later as it launched a series of investigations into alleged communist elements inside the U.S. government and other aspects of U.S. society.
Gingrich framed the idea of its revival in some form as part of an inevitable escalation of the conflict with the Syria and Iraq-based militant group.
"We're going to ultimately declare a war on Islamic supremacists and we're going to say, if you pledge allegiance to ISIS, you are a traitor and you have lost your citizenship," he said. "We're going to take much tougher positions."

after three young men turned a pet monkey loose on a high school girl have killed at least 20 people.

The girl's family sought revenge after the monkey scratched and bit her last week, and killed all three men along with the animal.

Bader al-Daheli, a civil activist, said Sunday that the two main tribes in the southern city of Sabha, Awlad Suleiman and Gadhadhfa, are each backed by armed groups.

Abdel-Rahman Areish, the head of Sabha hospital, said 20 people have been killed and 50 wounded.

"There was an escalation on the second and third days with the use of tanks, mortars and other heavy weapons," a resident told Reuters by telephone, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the desintigrating security situation.

"There are still sporadic clashes and life is completely shut down in the areas where there has been fighting."

The casualty toll was for the Awed Suleiman tribe alone as information was not immediately available from another hospital being used for their rivals.

In the Sabha region, a hub for refugee and arms smuggling in Libya's often neglected south, militia abuses and the deterioration of living conditions have been especially acute.

The Gaddadfa and the Awlad Suleiman represent the most powerful armed factions in the region.

During the latest clashes, which took place in the city centre, initial attempts by tribal leaders to calm the fighting and arrange a ceasefire so that bodies could be recovered had failed, residents said.

Libya slid into chaos after the 2011 ouster and killing of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Much of the country is effectively ruled by a patchwork of local or tribal militias.

Hey! What the heck! How dare local law enforcement prevent supremely enlightened Westerners from doing whatever they please? Don't they know Westerners have the right to do whatever they want in brown-skinned countries? The world is upside down.

These people are disgusting! However, such extreme groups are tiny minorities, and are widely condemned by Americans everywhere. You know what else? The First Amendment gives Americans the right to Free Speech, even ones the government doesn't like. That's one of the major difference between America and the People's Republic of China; citizens don't get arrested for peacefully gathering to voice their opinions and concerns.

Theatrical stunts like hosting separatists in the White House serve neither American nor Chinese interests. They do, however, expose hypocrisy in US foreign policy, and create greater tensions for no appreciable gains. So what, you say? Consider these contrasting pictures: Xi Jinping promotes OBOR, RCEP, and FTAAP; Donald Trump kills TPP and then promotes White House photo op with a religious separatist. Who do you say is better serving his country's long-term national interests?

Ulaanbaatar: Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said on Wednesday he would visit US President-elect Donald Trump, a meeting that would infuriate Beijing which views the Nobel peace prize-winning monk as a dangerous separatist.

Speaking during a visit to Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar and asked about the US election, the Dalai Lama said he had always considered the United States a "leading nation of the free world".

"I think there are some problems to go to United States, so I will go to see the new president," he said.

US President Barack Obama met the Dalai Lama at the White House in June despite a warning by China that it would damage diplomatic relations. It was Obama's fourth White House meeting with the Dalai Lama in the past eight years.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the Dalai Lama travelled the globe seeking audiences with foreign leaders to try to damage relations between them and China.

"We hope the international community can further see clearly the anti-China, separatist essence of the Dalai Lama, and appropriately and cautiously handle Tibet-related issues," Geng told a daily news briefing.

The Dalai Lama, speaking in English, brushed off some of the US election campaign rhetoric.

"Sometimes I feel during election the candidate has more freedom to express. Once elected, having the responsibility, then they have to tell you their sort of vision, their works according to reality."

, mimicking his hair style and "small mouth" in an interview with Good Morning Britain.

China regards the Dalai Lama as a separatist, though he says he merely seeks genuine autonomy for his Himalayan homeland Tibet, which Communist Chinese troops "peacefully liberated" in 1950.

China has been angered by Mongolia's decision to allow him to visit, though Mongolia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement to the Montsame news agency that the government had nothing to do with the trip, which they said was arranged by Mongolian Buddhists.

After the Dalai Lama's visit to Mongolia in 2006, China briefly cancelled flights between Beijing and Ulaanbaatar.

Beijing frequently expresses its anger with countries that host the Dalai Lama, who fled to India in 1959 following a failed uprising against the Chinese.

Rights groups and exiles accuse China of trampling on the religious and cultural rights of the Tibetan people, charges strongly denied by Beijing, which says its rule has ended serfdom and brought prosperity to a once backward region.

What the Heck?!

Clinton's lead in the popular vote surpasses 2 million
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!
The big lead in popular vote is misleading for two major reasons, election strategy and absentee ballots. Due to the Electoral College system favoring smaller states, election strategies revolve around maximizing 270+ counts and not total popular votes. Had the latter been the determination for victory, then Trump would have campaigned much differently. On absentee ballots, some states don't count them unless the election margins are thin. Therefore, a lot of military ballots aren't counted, and history show military votes skew heavily towards the GOP.

Bottom line is Hillary might have close to 3 million more popular votes than Trump, but it doesn't matter at all in the US Presidential election system, if she can't win 270 Electoral College votes.
