I think that main proplem with Russia is that they dont know it themself, how to deal witht the current world. Sure they all know how to act bit bully, but in overal that sort of diplomacy doesent lead into anything good. The west needs Russia more as an enemy than partner in economics, becouse partnership in equal terms would need healthy economyes in russia and with its potential, capitalist russia migth look freightening, if its still eager to pursuite superpower status. In that propect we migth see Russia as ruler of the europe and EU cannot compite against such.
But offcourse its a wery distance illusion, with almoust no changes to come true. I have little doupt whatsoever how honest all western efforts to stabilize Russian economyes are. if there would be will for it in the European side, it would shown with better ways than letting former warsav pact/soviet brake-away states dictate EU's Russian policyes.
But i think Russians lacks will to achieve any consensuss with Eu as much as europeans. Wheter the political elite in there doesent understand international diplomacy and politics from non-superpower point of view or they simply doesent want to go in that way. Only thing thats certain is the uncertainity in any Russian foreing actions. It kinda seems that Moscow is like a child playing whit adult toys and play mates, it test and tryes out things as it has always done but doesent realize that its not allowed to act so any longer.
But with Russia its also to be noticed that the reach into asia isent just thing on the map. Russia has ability to search partners in the region, like china, with regional efforts only and it shouldnt be included as global ally network. There are other candinates as well, expecially the spreading leftist revolution in latin America, but Russia needs things to be cleared economically and politically before it can start play with 'adults'. And route to that goes, unfortuanetly trough more authoritan centralication. Putin knows this, and every possible way is taken consideration and it isent 'paranoid' power -complex BS that western media wants tocelebrate with. And soon as Russia has stable power once more, it can truelly exploid its potential as key holder of many, many important strategical raw-materials.
There china lacks the essential feature to domination over Russia. China hasent got oil or other fossilfuels to statisfy its needs, but Russia has and if Russia could field once again, stability, China cannot overhelm it as the ruler of the 'empire of the evil', Soviet heritage is still too great potential to Russia and china has long way to go to par with it, but this advantage isent forever and what ever choises are made, those should be taken in few years from now.
