Members of the Afghan National Army and International Security Assistance Force fought off an estimated 30 anti-Afghan forces (AAF) that fired on a dismounted patrol near Nishigam village, wounding three. The AAF attacked Bari Alai with small arms and heavy machine gun fire from the surrounding territory. ANA and ISAF suppressed the attackers with direct and indirect fires, as well as air-to-ground missiles and bombs. 24th MEU Marines are currently training in a series of sustainment and bilateral exercises while in Djibouti. The 24th MEU is currently on a seven month deployment aboard Nassau Amphibious Ready Group vessels as the theatre reserve force for Central Command.

Maj. Jason Egan, Marine Attack Squadron 311 pilot, launches off the deck of the USS Peleliu in an AV-8B Harrier at night during the squadron’s final predeployment exercise April 16, 2010. Six Harriers and approximately 80 squadron Marines left Yuma April 15 to participate in their third and final predeployment training evolution off the coast of California. The exercise, which began April 16 and is scheduled to end April 27, included the entire 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The squadron is slated to deploy to the Pacific and Indian Oceans with the 15th MEU in May. The remainder of the squadron deployed to Japan aboard the USS Essex with the 31st MEU in January.
