CNO Richardson: Perry Frigates Only Inactive Hulls Navy Considering Returning to Active Fleet; DDG Life Extension Study Underway

While all options are on the table in the Navy’s push to field a 355-ship fleet, when it comes to reactivating ships in the inactive fleet, the service is realistically only looking at seven decommissioned Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates (FFG-7), Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson told USNI News on Thursday.

HII Awarded $3 Billion To Build Amphibious Assault Ship Bougainville (LHA 8)

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has been awarded a $3 billion contract for the detail design and construction of the amphibious assault ship Bougainville (LHA 8). Ingalls was awarded the original long-lead material contract for the third ship in the America (LHA 6) class on June 30, 2016.
Our shipbuilders do an outstanding job building large-deck amphibious warships,” Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias said. “We look forward to incorporating 50 years of amphibious shipbuilding knowledge into the Navy’s newest assault ship and providing the sailors and Marines a complex and highly capable product to perform their missions of freedom.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2018, and delivery is expected in 2024. Tripoli (LHA 7), the second of the America-class amphibious assault ships, is currently under construction at Ingalls and was launched on May 1. The ship will be christened on Sept. 16.

Understand it is a busy water way but how could this possibly happen to such a high tech warship with state of the art surface search radars and sailors on watch. Hope no one is seriously hurt.

In this bbc report, there are tracks of ACX Crystal. One can see the many changes of courses, some of them very sharp.

Unless everybody on the two ships was sleeping (possible but would be crazy), it looks to me like some kind of deliberate maneuvers. Why? Let's hear what USN and the captain of the container have to say. A plausible guess is that Fitzgerald want to stop and board ACX Crystal for unknown reason, ACX Crystal refused, Fitzgerald gave chase and eventually decided to stop right in the course of ACX Crystal which either could not stop in time or refuse to budge.

Yes, but in the end it's the US tax payers (like us) has to pay to repair for this damage. Now the question is how much the Philippine Merchant is at fault and how much damage they must pay as well is the question.

You and master Delft have both "stepped in it" here Bub, those members of the Fitzgerald's crew have already paid the ultimate price, I recommend that Jeff Head and BDPopeye hold a hearing at the mast for you two "land lubbers" who seem unable to wrap your minds around the real lose here??? I say walking the "plank" is to good fer ye! Kwai and Master Jura, arrest these two and throw them in the Brigg!

My mistake the crew was Filipino but the ship was owned and operated by Japanese shipping company shipping company Nippon Yusen K.K.

I've watched CNN it says that the possibility of the missing sailors could still be trapped inside the crushed compartments. I hope they are alright.:(

and there you go CNN, let the AFB give you a little straight talk, those compartments were sealed as the general quarters alarms sounded, those shipmates are NOT alright, I wish I were wrong, I pray I'm wrong!
