I thought that's what LCACs are for LOL and the jarheads can land on the beach with dry feet too!
LCACs cannot deliver an entire company of Marines or US Army troops and their equipment 500 miles away in one night. Not enough LCACs to do it, and they do not have enough range.

Each one of these babies can do that.

45 knots...all night long, and all of those troops and their equipment show up on someone's doorstep. And that's just one ship. If a commander had 3-4 of these in theater, we are talking about moving a whole lot of folks very fast.

Our amphib vessels would be less than half as fast, and not be able to get into the shallow drafts these guys can.

So, they give a lot of flexibility and speed for rapid transits where we did not have them before. Now, there are things they cannot do. They have no well deck so no LCACs and beach assaults. They have no significant armament outside of maybe .50 cals and maybe 25mm cannons. They have a decent landing pad for up to an Osprey sized aircraft, but no hanger.

World Maritime News said:
The USNS John Glenn (T-MLP 2) successfully completed Builder’s Sea Trials on Jan. 13.

During the week of sea trials the shipbuilder, General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO), conducted comprehensive tests to demonstrate the performance of all of the ship’s major systems.

“John Glenn performed extremely well, a testament to the thorough preparation by NASSCO, the Navy MLP program office, and our Supervisors of Shipbuilding,” said Capt. Henry Stevens, strategic and theater sealift program manager, Program Executive Office, Ships. “This ship is well on its way to acceptance trials and delivery later this year.”

USNS John Glenn is the second ship of the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) class. Using the commercially designed Alaska-class crude oil carrier as its base, the Navy’s Strategic and Theater Sealift Program Office (PMS 385) worked in conjunction with NASSCO to develop a design that supports the Navy’s core capabilities while maintaining low costs.

MLP has a maximum speed of 15 knots and range of 9,500 nautical miles. The ship has tankage for 100,000 gallons of potable water and can hold 380,000 gallons of JP-5 jet fuel. Acting as a mobile seabase, MLP will be part of the critical access infrastructure that supports the deployment of forces and supplies to provide prepositioned equipment and supplies with flexible distribution in support of a variety of missions including humanitarian support and sustainment of traditional military missions.

Following Builder’s Trials, the ship will be inspected by the Navy Board of Inspection and Survey during a series of Acceptance Trials. Delivery of the ship to the Navy is expected in March 2014.

As one of the Defense Department’s largest acquisition organizations, PEO Ships is responsible for executing the development and procurement of all destroyers, amphibious ships, special mission and support ships, and special warfare craft. Delivering high-quality war fighting assets – while balancing affordability and capability – is key to supporting the Navy’s Maritime Strategy.
These are going to be very effective ships, allowing the US Navy to implement its Sea Basing strategy to transfer and deploy large forces at sea without the need for a land base. During the testing of this concept, large 60,000-70,000 tons prepositioning ships like the Watson Class, would moor alongside vessels simulating Mobile Landing Platforms and transfer vehilces, equipment, and material. The MLP will then take the equipment, vehicles, and material, and join up with a US Navy Amphibious Ready Group and either transfer it to a US Navy LHD or LHA, or use LCACs itself to transfer it to shore, depending on the combat state of the beachhead at the time.

Here's a picture showing a testing of this concept several years ago with the USNS Watkins moored next to the heavy lift ship MV Mighty Servant (which was simulating an MLP) before the MLP design was finalized and construction of the class started.

It all comes down to cost benefit analysis. Personally i think the $ is better spent elsewhere that I think is more needed than the small capability this ship offers to our current warfighters. If I want to land a bunch of troops at someones doorstep I'll be using an LHD or LPD instead of 4 or 5 of these babies.

Don't get me wrong I agree with what you said and what this class of ship has to offer just that in our current state of belt tightening there are more pressing needs in the Navy in my humble opinion.

Given the emerging threats, the low cost, the capacity it offers and the fact that JHSV is not simply a Navy ship but a army one to. I think its with it.

The video poster was something called Syria Tube part of its logo reads "God Bless Syria, Al-Assad" so it should be obvious that the video would be pointed against the FSA hence emphasis on the claim of then being AQ. Then there is the tag lines posted with it.
including conspiracy theorists style pointed questions
"does he work for the CIA?"
"I thought this was illegal in your country..."
now having watched the video. Vallely is not leading anything. He's being taken on a guided tour. Although he is armed, he is carrying a pistol, other then that in the video he holds a AK74 but it looks mostly like its just to get it out of the way as he is being driven in a regular car. Given that the conflict is very active and the fact that his visit is likely unauthorized as well who is doing the fighting my guess is Vallely is packing for personal defense.

most of the video is photo ops. Shaking hands with the troops smiles and challenge coins that kinda thing. So the poster obviously doesn't know what is happening. Then come the politics. Vallely is a hard conservative. He called for a check of Obama's Birth certificate. He's also called for a petition to the house of reps to hold a no confidence vote. Very high profile so I doubt the CIA was actively involved in his trip. To many questions if he was hurt or killed.
Add to this that on January 9th he was on the Denise Simon experience a American radio program on WDFP "Cowboy Logic"

About a week ago this thread featured a ridiculous homeless Colonel getting seven grand a month so I wonder what's the retirement income (paid by the Pentagon, I should add) of a General LOL

Then what a hell is he doing with Syrian rebels ? They may not be Al Qaeda but certainly have links with Islamic groups , and American conservatives oppose any kind of help for them .
More likely explanation is that he is working for some "security" company like former Blackwater , with tacit support of US Government and on the payroll of KSA .

Thunder, there is no confirmation of him doing anything but talking and getting photos. Hell John McCain did that. The video shows him getting a brief of where they will go and what they will see. Him inspecting the convoy he will take. Him being driven to the area they chose to show him. Him getting photos taken. This is a politics, Vallely like some others seems to side with the FSA, and has gone to bat for them claiming them to be secular. And there may still be some remaining faction of the original FSA uncorrupted.

as it stands though this video is not proof of anything more then a meet and greet, unless you can provide a second video that shows more then this one.
