A US nuclear bomber fired training rounds over St. Petersburg.

The US Air Force B-52H Stratofortress strategic bomber, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, has taken a position to launch missiles in St. Petersburg, near the island of Gotland - 200 km from the northern capital.

After that, the American bomber made a sharp turn and headed towards the Baltic.

The legend of the exercises is advancing Northwest District anti-missile defense / air defense and launching nuclear missile strikes on Russia's military and infrastructure facilities, as well as "interaction work" with the air forces of NATO countries

That request to Congress includes $6 billion to support Ukraine, NATO, and other European partner states, and $9.1 billion for DoD’s Pacific Deterrence Initiative.

However, US observers immediately drew attention to the gargantuan size of the Pentagon’s new budget. While the DoD’s request amounts to $842 billion, the White House is requesting $886.4 billion in funding for national security. But that is not all, DC think tanks warn: if one adds emergency military aid packages for Ukraine this year and potential tens of billions of dollars in Congressional “add-ons” the total defense spending is about to reach a staggering $950 billion or more for FY2024. The Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, a US think tank, has called the forthcoming Pentagon budget the “biggest since World War II,” and far bigger than at the peaks of the Korean, Vietnam, or Cold Wars.

This is long overdue. What I do not get is why they did not go for a four engine option for the B-52.

You can see a nice view where the actual engines are from the ground :

There was not a lot of option for 4 engines because of the space available for larger diameter fans. B-52 engines are already low hanging for the farther pairs. So it was possible to fit 4 low bypass bigger engine or 8 high bypass smaller ones... they choose the later.

There wasn't enough space to fit 4 large diameter engines due to the wings. Replacement of the wings was too expensive. Also, there would never be low bypass ratio engines due to fuel economy and range. Low bypasses are made for fighter jets while bigger, slower planes use higher bypass ratios.

Exactly it's why they put 8 like I said...the choice of 4 low bypass would not have been a gain.
