The navy is utilizing the MQ-8C platform for testing conceptual mine-countermeasures systems for its unmanned systems; such as the MQ-8 family; equipping the aircraft with the Single-system Multi-mission Airborne Mine Detection (SMAMD) pods located on the sides of the aircraft.

Testing is currently being carried out by the navy at Eglin Air-force Base in Florida.

"Better they do it overseas than here" I suppose. Maybe a new recruiting slogan could be "Shoot Terrorists, not Teachers!"

What a travesty. Modern weapons systems are increasingly complex, necessitating a corresponding increase in operator technical and tactical proficiency for them to be used effectively. If anything, we should be pushing for *higher* entry requirements, work to increase how competitive military positions are to the civilian market, and then downsize our force accordingly. Cut costs, not corners.
I agree, though hiring the mentally ill with school shooter tendencies for the military is bad idea and they should be sent for therapy instead, otherwise they might go rambo on the base instead of in the schools.

The first testing unit of Lockheed Martins LANCE pod mounted defensive laser weapon has reportedly been delivered to the air force for evaluation this month.

The laser system, which is expected to fall under a hundred kilowatts of power is expected to pave way for airborne active counter measure capabilities in the field of directed energy weapons.

An executive at Lockheed Martin boasted “It is the smallest, lightest, high energy laser of its power class that Lockheed Martin has built to date,” and that they fully expect to make critical leaps forward in the field over the next couple of years.

It’s likely that the testing data from the LANCE program and first generation pods will directly influence the design process for both the F/A-XX and the NGAD programs respectively.

Seems like they have a long, long way to go if this is just coming out a lab and given to researchers.
