US F/A-XX and F-X 6th Gen Aircraft News Thread

Agreed. It would have made much more sense to make the initial 6th generation fighter a twin engine large aircraft to replace the F-15 and F-22. To find the budget to develop it the program should be a joint effort between the USAF and US Navy. As for the F-35 cost that could be mitigated with a program to reduce costs to manufacture and maintain the aircraft. Instead of developing a whole new 6th generation aircraft which will likely end up not being any cheaper.

I don't see how you can make a light fighter cheaper than the F-35 while also delivering sixth generations capability. At best, I think you could build a new dual engine air frame with "sixth generation features" (whatever that means) that utilizes already in production radar, engines, avionics, etc. Basically no new equipment outside of the airframe unless it is absolutely necessary.
You skip on the hard/testable requirements like speed, range and maneuverability and sell emphasis on 'network centric capability'

I wonder if Trump will massively expand the military budget? He could be much more hawkish this time around, but that remains to be seen. Basically, the Air Force and Navy might get the "resources" they need to build these projects.

They might get more money, but the conversion efficiency of that money into actual results is looking more and more abysmal by the day. So the root problems are still not getting addressed.

So no optional manned then?

However, the Navy has now opted for a fully manned platform.

“F/A-XX is intended to be a manned platform,” Donnelly says, noting that the “F/A-XX will really be our pivot point from a manned air wing to a hybrid future, with a manned-unmanned air wing.”
CCA will be the unmanned nodes, F/A-XX will be manned

The Air Force should pool development of NGAD with the Navy's F/A-XX and stop this foolish waste of money.
