Were those aircraft are gonna be refueled?
A part from that Russia had long range radars than can spot those aircraft fast, those jets are not gonna last too long.
Ironically drones are their best option to help them resist for while, cheap, small, can fly from anywhere, easier to conceal and the lost of one is not as bigger deal as to lose an aircraft and a pilot, at least from a PR standpoint.
Fuel and bomb up in Poland/Rumania, do a quick touch and go in Ukraine for formality's sake, kill Russians, quick touch and go on the way back then fuel and bomb up again.

But agreed, NATO should really be giving Ukraine Predators and Reapers. Perhaps they will.

Looks like Russians are advancing at a reckless pace. Anything damage or broken down is simply left on the side of the road. Recon and flank defenses aren't even keeping up. Seems like Russia has some big goal in sight.

That could be a reason. Other than T-90's and T-80's, I remember they had an ungodly amount of T-72's sitting all over Russia. Also the current T-72B3 modernization is supposed to be on the cheap side of things.

But hey, at least we haven't seen any T-62M strutting around like in 2008.

They can take off from highways as well. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're already doing with the TB-2s.

They can take off from highway as a stunt, as a routine operation? Not so much

They need to manage interference from civilian traffic, needs to provide fuel and munition stockpile, communication equipment ... etc They need relatively straight and well conditioned stretch of road which there are only a finite number of choices, once they take of or land the location is immediately exposed.... All the hassle for no gain at all

Taiwan also entertained this idea many years ago and promptly gave up on it.

TB-2 though is definitely operating from highway

Also remember China did "invade" Vietnam and got condemned by half of the world (all Europe east and west, most Americas except US and some Africans), call that error of judgement or ego or pride as you will.
The key here is that the US actually supported China there and it is important because it means that China could get basically scot-free there - American dogs might bark but won't bite without tacit approval. So it was hardly an error of judgment - they reached their goal without getting sanctioned to hell, unlike Russia.

General Staff of Ukraine: Russian troops regrouped and accumulated armored vehicles and missile and artillery weapons in certain areas, primarily to surround and capture Kyiv and major cities of Ukraine, including Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Odessa, Kherson and Mariupol. A significant part of military equipment comes from the territory of Belarus and through the occupied Crimea

In a way it makes sense. If you're have to abandon your equipment, but you're confident you'll win, you might as well leave it where it is and pick it up after.
