This whole Ukraine thing is a good lesson to the advocate of "China should have a NATO style alliance system."
  • The US certainly gained in such alliance by sacrificing and taking hostage of "old Europe".
  • "old Europe" is the looser forced to do things against its interest.
  • The US win won't last for long because the "sacrificed" "old Europe" will want even more to leave the alliance.
The alliance is there just because the strong one is able to force other members hand. By doing so it plants the seed for breakup. Essentially, if one is strong one don't need a piece paper to have ones way. When one becomes weak, that paper won't keep people together.

And as it stands, China isn't pursuing to have something like that (I'm doubtful this will change in the future as well).

Besides as it stands, China can just always outright say they would intervene if X happened (like they did with korean war where they said if the 38th was crossed, they would intervene in the war) and that should work to be enough of a threat (hm, maybe not to the US with all of its senile/corrupt and incompetent elites....)

I wonder how this ukraine war will change attitudes of taiwanese. Previously many of them used to have a false sense of security that the whole world would back up a so called free democracy, and that an invasion was unthinkable in the modern era.

The entirety of the western world leaving ukraine out for rape after fanning the flames for years must be very shocking to these frogs under the well.
Puzzling, since when was the Western world obliged to back Ukraine up?
