And I've been to Taiwan and HK numerous times in the recent years. My best friend lives in Taiwan right now. You cannot possibly visit Taipei and HK and think Taipei is less Chinese than HK. Culturally speaking, Taipei is more like southern China than even Shanghai is.
Think about it this way, 10% of Taiwanese population lives in the mainland. There are a whole lot of Taiwanese people with spouses from the mainland. There are a whole lot of Taiwanese businesses operating in the mainland. There is a lot of ties between the two sides of the strait. This is not like 20 years ago when Taiwanese and HKers all thought they were richer and more sophisticated than mainlanders.
Sure, they don't donate money to China. Why would they donate money to a place that's trying to conquer them? But are they scared of pissing China off? They sure are. If anything, the Ukrainian conflict will convince more Taiwanese people that they are by themselves and should be on their best behaviour in their dealings with the mainland.
How do you define Southern Chinese? As a Fujianese, I can say that culturally speaking the difference between Fujian and Guangdong is day and night. Hong Kong culturally speaking is more like Guangdong. Taiwan culturally speaking is more like Xiamen. Any attempt to say one place is more Chinese than other place is just absurd to begin with. Both Hong Kong and Shanghai are international city. That's why you would feel it is much more modernized and sophisticated and westernized unlike Taipei which is no better than 3 tier cities in China.
Do you know how many Hong Kongers have families in China? Do you know how many Hong Kongers would retire and live in Guanddong and Fujian. Do you know that more Hong Kongers married mainlanders than Taiwanese married mainlanders? Do you know how much Hong Kongers invest in China? The ties between Hong Kong and China are much stronger than the ties between Taiwan and China. But such ties didn't stop the riots in HK. Such ties didn't prevent HK to descend into chaos.
If fear can prevent craziness, then Ukrainians wouldn't have been fighting the Russians right now. If fear can create rationality, then Hong Kongers wouldn't riot and try to overthrow the Hong Kong government.
You stressed about ties. I am telling you Hong Kongers have been donating money to China even when they don't want to be handover to mainland China and when they have disagreement with mainland Chinese. Ties and bond mean you are helping each others in time of needs. Mainland China is willing to help Hong Kong and Taiwan but Taiwan never is willing to help out China. Taiwanese talk about brother and bond with mainland Chinese when doing business and being friendly. But the truth is they bow to Japan and the US. Donate money to Japan. Arresting Chinese fisherman but failed to protect its own fishermen from being arrested by Japanese. I blamed CCTV for not exposing what Taiwanese truly feel about China and Chinese.
