From the speech:
"Ukraine is a creation of Vladimir Lenin - he is it's creator and architect (...) . Recently they started taking down statues of him, calling it 'decommunisation'. You want 'decommunisation '? We'll be happy with it, but why stop half way there? We are ready to show you what is a full decommunisation of the Ukraine"

Putin calling the West's bluff?

Nah, it's just for internal propaganda. The mythical "West" didn't comply with his demands (probably they miscalculated and thought it will be easier, like it used to be) so he's wielding the axe as was expected in his Plan B for this situation.

Wow, what a speech from Mr.Putin. Anyone who has some free time would be well served if he listened this speech.

I do recommend people listen to it.

Then you will understand his intentions.

I flinched when he brought up Ukraine with nuclear weapons. Nations stating they are worried about other's WMDs has a mildly bad reputation at this point.

The independence thing is merely the first step. From what I heard on his speech, he really seems to be ready to go all the way to the end.

It does appear so. We will see.

Difficult days ahead (for the West)

The West? no. This will matter little for them in the end. For Ukrainians, yes.

Why do I hear crickets in the distance?

Probably for two reasons.

1. The rational reason: snap decisions are often bad ones. If a united front is required, it will take all the nations of the West speaking to each other to build that.

2. The West has fallen into the massive trap of chitchat being a real substitute for action. Let's talk about it to find a solution often finds only your own navel to gaze in.

Interestingly, it does mean the West didn't have the sanctions all up and ready like they said. There was no redline here as far as I can see yet. Perhaps tomorrow. Given the chitchat nature of diplomacy in the West, might be in a week. Or never.
